GARY MANCHEL

Gary Manchel, the eighth head coach in the history of the men’s program, enters his 13th season as the Laker leader in 2015-16. Manchel has revitalized the Laker program and continues to build on his impressive resume that includes 332 career wins. In the 2014-15 season, Mercyhurst won 20 games and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history. The Lakers allowed 62.2 points per game, second-best in the PSAC. Manchel was announced as the PSAC Western Division Coach of the Year as he led his team to a second place finish in the conference. They again defeated IUP on the road in the regular season for the second time ever. Mercyhurst has now defeated the Crimson Hawks in each of the last five seasons-the only team to achieve that feat. Last season, The Lakers beat every other team in the PSAC Western Division for the second time in three years. In 2013-14, Manchel collected his 300th career win with a 66-62 win over Bloomsburg December 18. He guided the Lakers to a fifth straight PSAC Tournament appearance and outdid preseason expectations for a sixth consecutive time. The Lakers once again outdid preseason expectations in 2012-13, winning 16 games and finishing fifth in the PSAC Western Division. Luis Leao wrapped up an outstanding career as one of the top studentathletes in Manchel’s tenure. The 6-5 forward was named NABC All-

American, PSAC Western Division Athlete of the Year, and Capital One Academic All-America after putting 18.6 points and 6.7 rebounds as a senior. Mercyhurst had several highlight moments throughout the year. Jonathan Ouegnin made a fadeaway three-pointer at the buzzer to lift the Lakers to a 70-67 overtime win against California (Pa.) February 2. The next weekend, Mercyhurst fell behind Slippery Rock by 18 points in the first half before rallying for a 60-57 victory. Next, the Lakers took down #11 IUP, 57-48, on February 16, marking Manchel’s third straight campaign with a win over the Crimson Hawks. Mercyhurst closed its home schedule with a recordsetting 44-36 win over #24 Gannon on February 22. The point total is the lowest in program history in a winning effort and the combined score is tied for the lowest in Mercyhurst annals. In the victory, Ouegnin had a thunderous dunk in the second half. The play earned national recognition, landing at #3 on ESPN’s SportsCenter’s Top 10 Plays. Manchel guided the Lakers to a fourth straight conference tournament berth. In 2011-12, the Lakers won 18 games. The squad ran off six straight victories through the first round of divisional play. The streak included a 71-47 home win over nationallyranked Indiana (Pa.) on January 21. It was the Lakers’ first win over a Top 10 team since the 2006-07 campaign, when they beat Grand Valley State. Manchel also directed his group to a season sweep of crosstown rival Gannon. Mercyhurst beat Slippery Rock, 7769, on February 28, securing its first PSAC Final Four appearance since joining the league prior to the 2008-09 season. The win also exacted some revenge, as the Rock had eliminated Mercyhurst from the PSAC Tournament in 2011.

Leao was named PSAC Men’s Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year as the student-athlete with the highest grade point average at the conference championship. In 2010-11, Mercyhurst posted its first 20-win season under Manchel as he was named Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division Coach of the Year. It was the fourth 20-win campaign in the program’s history. The Lakers reeled off an 11-game winning streak mid-season and reached 17th in the NCAA rankings. Heiden Ratner and Luis Leao were both named first team All-PSAC West. After building the Lakers into one of the most consistent programs in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC), Manchel guided the Lakers in their first year as full-time member within the PSAC in 2008-09.
