Volume 19, No. 2 (Fall 2008)

Message from the Chair Everyone who attended this year’s ANTEC in Milwaukee, especially those who attended the sessions of the Special Interest Group on Joining Plastics and Composites, was very impressed by the high caliber of the papers and plenary sessions. It was very impressive to see the number of groups involved in excellent research into joining techniques and to hear such well-articulated presentations. Given the comparative youth of the presenters, the future of welding research is very bright! 0ur thanks to all of the researchers, reviewers, moderators, and social organizers who made this week in Milwaukee so special, but we are all especially indebted to our hard-working TPC, Alex Savitski. That is a very big job, and Alex is to be commended for managing to fit it into his already very demanding schedule at Baxter. The international flavour of our SIG is illustrated by the fact that our speakers spanned 4 continents, with four speakers each from Germany and the US, 3 speakers from Canada, and 1 each from Japan and Argentina. It is wonderful to see this sharing of knowledge being developed in so many different centres. This year the percentage of industrial papers was lower than last, and we are grateful that Visteon and the Orient Corporation continue to promote publishable research. Last year there was more industrial representation, at least partly because of the Industry Panel. In 2009 we plan to have another panel to be able to specifically invite more industrial papers. The best paper award for ANTEC ™2008 went to Mingliang Chen, who is from China and completed much of his education there. Part of his doctoral research in Canada is included in the paper, which is published in this Newsletter. The best student presentation was given by Sergio Amancio, whose family is Italian. They had settled in Brazil, where Sergio obtained his education, but he is presently in Germany. It was remarkable that his presentation, which was presumably in his fourth language, was so well done as to receive the Presentation Award. As always, we thank Branson Ultrasonics for their steadfast support of our SIG. Not only do they continue to organize and pay for a dinner honouring the authors and organizers, they also supply the Best Paper plaque. Both of these are greatly appreciated, but in particular the dinners have always been a wonderful opportunity to have some social time together as a group. Many, many thanks to Jeff Frantz, who has been the person at Branson who has taken care of these activities for at least the past three years, as well as acting as one of the reviewers. This Newsletter is also an opportunity to remind all of our past authors plus hopefully many new ones that the Call for Papers has already been announced on the SPE website, and the deadline for submission of an Abstract is coming soon (September 1, 2008.) Please look over your past year’s research a see whether there is an interesting paper there that you can present in Chicago this upcoming June. We plan to have another Industry Panel, this time on Medical Applications. No matter what your particular interest, I encourage your attendance June 22 - 24 in Chicago for the special ANTEC @ NPE 2009. This is a great opportunity to visit the yearly plastics exhibition as well as taking in the technical papers at ANTEC. On behalf of the SIG executive, I look forward to seeing you there! Volume 19, No. 2 (Fall 2008)

Message from the TPC In May we met in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA for ANTEC™ 2008. This year the Joining SIG had 3 well-attended sessions for 15 papers. The six laser welding papers represented the largest number, and as in previous years, drew the largest interest and attendance, followed by papers on vibration welding and ultrasonic welding at five each. However, it seems that the largest number of people gathered (I have counted close to 50) was for the “Fricriveting: A New Technique for Joining Thermoplastics to Lightweight Alloys”, paper presented by Sergio Amancio. Other topics covered were hot plate, nano-composites, and electro-fusion welding of pipes. The members of our SIG are certainly reporting on a very wide selection of joining techniques, although we had noticeably fewer papers than in 2006 and 2007. This trend was present in other SPE Divisions and SIGs as well. In our SIG this reduction in participation affected the number of our overseas presenters – only six this year. However, the global nature of our field and strong interest in our topics were illustrated by the fact that, while the majority (9) of papers were from research groups from the United States and Canada, we had one paper from Japan, and one from Argentina. Europe was represented by the four papers from Germany. As has been true in the past, most of the research presented involved University researchers and EWI, which has a notfor-profit status as well. Only two papers came directly from the industry this year. This trend we find worrisome and we will try to address it in coming conferences by finding a way to attract equipment and materials vendors and technology users, as they represent an important source of new ideas and novel technologies, materials and machinery. One of the ways to attract vendors, which was discussed during the SIG’s Business Committee meeting, is holding an Industrial Panel. This format proved to be successful in the past as it has less restriction on presenters to promote their techniques and equipment, attracting both, vendors and potential users to such session. The topic of the next year Industrial Session was suggested to be a broad one – New Technologies Process Control in Medical Applications, although it can be amended during the session preparation based on the industry response. The annual “Best Paper Award” was given to Mingliang Chen and Phillip Bates for the paper “Prediction of Gap Bridging in Laser Transmission Welding of Amorphous Polymer”. If you were unable to attend the ANTEC you can read the paper here.
