a new biocide called Econea™. Developed by Janssen PMP, a division of Johnson & Johnson, Econea provides excellent antifouling protection from shell fouling. However, unlike other biocides, Econea™ degrades rapidly, and the products it degrades into are biodegradable which do not accumulate in the marine environment. Pacifica Plus is a dual biocide antifouling system, which uses Econea to ward off shell

fouling and Biolux® technology to control the release rate of the ZPT to combat slime. It is an ablative antifouling that wears away with use, which reduces paint build up and helps to improve fuel efficiency. Since Pacifica Plus is copper-free, it can be used in all waters and is suitable for use on all underwater surfaces, including aluminum, fiberglass, wood, and steel. In 2012, a new gray color was introduced in a gallon size and pints of black and gray were introduced for use on outdrives and outboard lower units.

Micron Technology In 1980, Interlux introduced Micron Technology, which in several ways represented a major technological breakthrough in antifouling paint production. First, boat owners could apply a bottom paint that would last over 18 months and could remain out of the water for extended periods without loss of antifouling protection. It also would wear down with use in a controlled manner so that boaters didn’t end up with big heavy coats of paint that would eventually have to be removed. It also proved that if the proper resin and biocide combination were used, less biocide was needed which actually gave better longevity than old-fashioned high copper antifouling paints.

Micron CF and Pacifica Plus from Interlux

“Starting with Micron 22 and running through Micron 33, Micron 44, Micron 66 as well as Micron CSC and Micron Extra, we at Interlux have always tried to provide the best in class antifouling protection for our customers,” said Jim Seidel, Interlux and Awlgrip Marketing Manager. “In 2013, we began offering Micron CF in bright, crisp colors that will not discolor at the waterline, like traditional antifoulings do. We have evolved the Micron line of paints to now include this copper-free formula with premium x performance, which represents a significant step-change in development for Interlux.” Adds Seidel: “With the use of Econea, a copper replacement technology and Interlux’s proprietary Micron Technology, we’re excited to present the outstanding performance qualities that only a Micron antifouling will offer.”

Micron Technology uses biocide more effectively than old-fashioned hard bottom paints for long lasting, multi-season protection with the ability to haul and relaunch without repainting. Micron antifoulings polish in a controlled manner, like a bar of soap, reducing paint buildup and eliminating the need for sanding when recoating. Micron paints polish to a smooth surface, which helps to maximize fuel savings. Micron® CF offers all the benefits of Micron Technology, plus it can be used on any substrate, including aluminum. It provides excellent antifouling protection in a copper-free formula. Unique to Micron CF are a variety of bright colors, including shell white. “Micron CF is an excellent choice for boatyards/marinas looking to reduce the amount of copper in the water from pressure washing,” said Seidel.
