Town of Milliken

JUNE 2011

Message from the Mayor: This month’s mayor’s message is written as a plea for help from the residents of Milliken. As some of you may already know, having read an article recently published in the “Johnstown Breeze”, the US Postal Service has informed us here in Milliken that, beginning June 15, all mail for Milliken residents, and the rural routes around Milliken, will be sorted and initiated in Johnstown. We are to have “counter service only” meaning you will be able to get stamps etc. here in Milliken but most of the work will be done in Johnstown. Supposedly, this will save the Postal Service money. It would seem the effect of this change will do nothing to save money, as our route carriers will not be laid off, but just transferred to Johnstown to do this work. Our Postmaster will be the only employee at the Milliken Post Office. We are not sure, yet, where another employee here in Milliken will go. The fact is, however, this proposed change has not been thought through well. The Town received no notice of the proposed change so that any dialogue could take place. We know that everyone needs to be frugal and financially sound but our local post office has little overhead and about every inch of our facility is being used. It is disturbing to think that this proposal is moving forward when Milliken is one of the fastest growing communities in Weld County and Weld County is the fastest growing county in the state. Just this last week, we broke ground for a new business coming to Milliken. Of course, the fear is that eventually the Postal Service will decide to close our facility completely. This proposed change actually opposes one of the important statements in the strategic plan for the Postal Service that being to connect with and provide service to the communities. The local post office is a huge part of the important activities for a community. So, what can you do to help. YOU CAN WRITE THE POSTAL SERVICE AND/OR CIRCULATE NEIGHBORHOOD PETITIONS opposing this move. It is difficult to find avenues in which such opposition can be voiced with the Postal Service but I do have an address if you wish to write a letter or drop them a postcard. The address is: Patrick Donahoe, Postmaster General 475 L Enfant Plaza SW Washington DC 20260-0010 Let’s flood this office with your letters, cards and petitions. We really need to keep our local, full-service post office here in Milliken. JOY! Janie Lichtfuss, Mayor

Save Milliken’s Post Office! The U.S. Postal Service is moving the mail carrier and sorting operations from the Milliken Post Office to the Johnstown Post Office. This move may eventually lead to closure of the Milliken Post Office. In addition to writing to the Postmaster General, you can voice our concern directly to the Postal Service by going on-line at www.usps.com and at the top of that webpage click on “Customer Service” and then “Send Us an E-mail”. Select “Problem” on the drop down menu, then “Business” or “Receiving Mail” and follow the prompts to type your message of opposition. Your comments are important!

ALL FIREWORKS ILLEGAL IN TOWN As the 4th of July approaches, be aware that MILLIKEN HAS A ZERO TOLERANCE POLICY ON THE POSSESSION, USE, PURCHASE OR SALE OF ANY FIREWORKS. This helps keep our kids safe and reduces the fire hazard presented by fireworks. Just because fireworks are available for sale in other jurisdictions does not legitimize their use within Milliken Town Limits. Please leave the fireworks to the professionals. Police officers will aggressively identify violators who will be cited and fireworks will be confiscated.
