Playing Rules: Mini 3on3 is played to three basic rules; • one continuous dribble • one step when carrying the ball • minimum contact.
The Scorekeeper is responsible for the filling in the scoresheet. Duties are outlined on the Scoresheet.

The Timekeeper is responsible for keeping time (stopping and starting the clock) and informing the referee(s) that time has expired. Duties are outlined on the Scoresheet.
Shooting foul • Blow your whistle, indicate the player and charge the foul to the player. • Award 2 points if shot is successful or 1 point if shot is missed. • Indicate that the non-shooting team has possession from the checking point. Ball out of bounds/Player out of bounds • Ball is out of bounds when it touches the floor or any object or person that is ON or outside the boundary line OR when it touches a player who is outside the court or on boundary line. • The player responsible for the out of bounds is the player who touched it last. To cause the ball to go out of bounds is a violation. • Possession to opposing team from checking point. • When it is unclear who put the ball out of bounds, use the arrow.

Mini 3on3 Based on the adult 3on3 game which is gaining in popularity worldwide and is expected to become a full Olympic sport soon. However Mini 3on3 differs from the adult version in that equal emphasis is placed on playing, refereeing and table officiating. Mini 3on3 encourages maximum participation as all children are involved all the time, and each basket can accommodate 12 players. It is ideal for the games phase of the PE lesson, the games phase of an after school session, Internal School Leagues, Extra-Curricular Inter School Tournaments, Festivals, Leagues, Club Sessions, Area Board events and Camps. Smaller schools find it easier to manage 3on3 Mini when getting a team of 12 from the same age group might be a problem.
The Court and Equipment • 1 basket per game • Decide on a boundary which can be the three point arc, or an area marked by cones and larger than the three point arc but smaller than the half-court. Also make sure there is sufficient space outside the boundary. • A checking point marked X which is located at the top of the 3 point arc or 6m from the basket. • Size 5 Mini-Basketball. • Numbered bibs or numbered school vests. • Mini-Basketball Scoresheet, download from www.basketballireland.ie (Primary Schools Downloads)’ • Player Foul Markers 1 to 5, Stopwatch, Alternating Possession Arrow. Teams • • •
The team should consist of 6 children. 3 play at any one time. The remaining 3 act as Timekeeper, Scorer, Referee.
Suggested Timing: (can be altered) Playing Quarters • Playing time; 4 minute quarters (running clock). • Interval; 1 minute. • Extra period of 2 mins if game ends in a tie. Rotation • 4 quarters. • The 3 on 3 on/off/on/off system is easiest to manage. However it is possible to change the formations in the second half. All children must be involved in all quarters and must actually play in two quarters. • Make sure all get a chance to act as referee, scorekeeper and timekeeper where there is more than one game. Recommended Rotation Playing Period

Playing Mini 3on3 • Line up facing opponents to know who to mark. • Use the Jump Ball to start each quarter and extra time. In other Jump Ball situations use alternating directional arrow. • The team with possession can dribble, pass, move – always looking for a score. • 2 points for a score, 1 point for a foul in the act of shooting. No free throws. • All changes of possession re-start at the “checking point marked X”. • This includes; after a score, after a defensive rebound, after a foul, after an out of bounds or after a violation (like travelling). • The ball must be “checked” by the defender, and this starts a new possession. • There are no charged time-outs. Teaching/Coaching hints Mini 3on3 increases playing time, facilitates more ball contact, encourages better spacing and less congestion, and teaches correct man to man defensive principles. And, it is fun to play. • • • • •
Stress using the three lanes, centre (Guard), left (Left Forward) and right (Right Forward). At the “checking point” or on receipt of a pass get into the “triple threat position” – facing the basket (can I shoot, pass, dribble?). Look up, Pass. Move. Fill the empty lane if free. Man to Man defence: Mark one player keeping between your player and the basket, while also being ready to “help” if an opponent runs by a team-mate.
