The “Maverick Goals for Kids” campaign, a program in which Minnesota State Men’s Hockey and Earl Johnson Furniture have combined forces, has raised more than $3660 in the past two years for local youth hockey. Each time the Mavericks score a goal (home or away), Earl Johnson Furniture donates $15 to the Mankato Area Hockey Association (MAHA). All proceeds are earmarked for underprivileged children from the area to help them offset the costs of playing hockey. The program is designed to give area businesses the opportunity to be involved with Minnesota State Athletics, create brand recognition and provide assistance to the Mankato Area Hockey Association. “The Goals for Kids program seemed a natural fit for us,” said Todd Johnson, owner and president of Earl Johnson Furniture. “I guess first of all, from having a kid involved with MAHA, we’re familiar with the organization. And from a business standpoint, we’re always looking for community-involvement opportunities. This was something in which we could be involved with youth sports and the Mavericks in a unique fashion and this is something we’re excited about.” MSU head coach Troy Jutting credited Johnson with his willingness to support the program. “Todd Johnson is a community-minded person who has stepped up to the plate with the program,” said Jutting. “We’re very appreciative for his willingness to partner up with us on this. By allowing the opportunity for kids who otherwise wouldn’t have the wherewithal to participate, hopefully this program will allow us to grow youth hockey in Mankato. Minnesota State student-athletes impact the Mankato community and surrounding areas through a comprehensive series of programs sponsored by the Department of Athletics. Recognizing the value of mentoring youth, helping families and assisting others, volunteer service projects and outreach programming allows MSU athletes to give back to the Mankato community. Teaming up with the MSU athletic marketing office, the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) these projects have included working with youth, families and seniors. The program gained an identity in 2006 with the acronym M.COM (Maverick Community Outreach Movement) was created.
