Minutes of the USTA NorCal Junior Team Tennis Committee Meeting Friday, November 4th 2016 NOTE: All minutes are final after approval by the committee and all committee decisions are subject to final approval by the USTA NorCal Board Mark Fairchilds, chair of the JTT Committee called the meeting to order at 12:30pm and roll call was conducted. Committee Members Present: Mark Fairchilds (chair), Tim Sunderland, Rosie Bareis, Caryn Cranston, Cris Bacharach, Nathan Ganesh, Bill Weber, Judy Newman USTA Staff Present: Darren Wenger, Junior Team Tennis Specialist; Summer Verhoeven, Manager of Junior Play; Chris Samuel, Junior Team Tennis Coordinator. Committee Members Absent: Tan Truong 1. 2017 Gar Glenney Cup The Gar Glenney Cup structure will need to be reviewed in order to continue the event As of 9/1/16 USTA SoCal no longer offers a 12U division and has implemented USTA Junior Ratings which eliminated beginner, intermediate and advanced division descriptions There is an imbalance in age with NorCal qualifying 15U teams and SoCal qualifying 14U teams In 2017 SoCal has committed to fielding 4 teams (18U Boys/Girls and 14U Boys/Girls) NorCal will field 4 teams (18U Boys/Girls and 14U Boys/Girls) There will be no 12U division in 2017 Collaboration between the sections will need to occur in order to create the foundation for a sustainable Gar Glenney Cup in 2018 and beyond 2. JTT Participation Data Analysis There was a comprehensive review of JTT participation data to identify trends and areas in which improvements could be made to increase participation and improve the overall product A few trends stood out over the last 3 years: Spring and fall season participation has increased significantly Summer season participation has declined All of the Same Gender Advanced divisions have declined in participation 12U Same Gender Boys/Girls only divisions has declined in participation 3. Junior Rating Bands – 2017 Levels of Play Committee began to review the new USTA Junior Rating system and discuss options available to implement the ratings bands in both local and Championship play The Coed Section Championships will implement Junior Ratings to define Advanced / Intermediate play Players rated 3.50 or higher are required to play in the Advanced division Players rated 3.49 or lower are eligible to play in the Intermediate division More review and discussion will occur on future calls
