From the highs in Alaska for the nationally-ranked Crusader volleyball team to the heartbreaking losses at home on the soccer field Thursday, the week was a roller-coaster of emotions for Northwest Nazarene fans. The now 15th-ranked NNU volleyball team provided the biggest highs with a four-set win at the University of Alaska followed by a sweep at Alaska Anchorage in a first-place battle. Thursday in soccer, a dramatic final 4 minutes in women’s soccer ended in a loss for NNU against Western Oregon, which eliminated the Crusaders from playoff contention, and the men’s soccer team suffered the same heartache in a different fashion, falling to Simon Fraser. The men’s soccer team bounced back with a dominating win on Saturday while the women’s soccer team suffered another heartbreaking loss on a late goal. VOLLEYBALL: Jet-lag? Nope. Frost-bite? Not a chance. Dominant? ABSOLUTELY. The trip north to Alaska couldn’t have gone much better for the Crusader volleyball team, which started the week after a long flight by turning back host Alaska, 26-28, 25-18, 25-17, 25-17 on Thursday night. Elayna Rice led the way with 16 kills and 10 digs for NNU, which fended off a fiery Nanook squad, while Andrea Terpstra had 12 kills and 3 blocks during a big weekend in Alaska. Taylor VanValey added 10 kills and 3 blocks, Michelle Terpstra dished out 49 assists and had 17 digs, Taylor Roberts was a defensive star with a match-high 18 digs and Linnea Phillips contributed 11 digs in the victory.

Then came the first of two straight HUGE matches — a first-place battle at Alaska Anchorage. Down 6 points midway through the first set, NNU suddenly took control of the match and cruised to a 25-21, 25-19-25-18 sweep of the Seawolves to complete a season sweep of UAA and claim the out-right GNAC lead. Andy Terpstra pounded down a match-high 15 kills and added 2 blocks — giving her 27 kills and 5 blocks on the week, a performance that earned her GNAC Offensive Player of the Week honors. Equally stunning Saturday was the performance of Roberts who had 29 digs, just 6 shy of the Andrea Terpstra GNAC record for a three-set match. Roberts finished the week with 47 digs total, an effort that gave NNU a sweep of GNAC awards as she was named Defensive Player of the Week. Michelle Terpstra added 40 assists and 10 digs in the win at UAA, Kendra Bodine had 11 kills and Kaitlyn Tuholski and Elayna Rice each had 11 digs for NNU. Next up for the Crusaders is a second-straight colossal clash as 15th-ranked NNU hosts No. 9 Western Washington on Thursday night at 7 p.m. at the Johnson Sports Center in another battle for the GNAC lead. The Vikings beat the Crusaders in four sets earlier this season in Bellingham, Wash., the 10th-straight win in the head-to-head series for WWU. Taylor MEN’S SOCCER: Rene Duevel hit the post. Erik Anderson hit the crossbar for the Crusaders. Roberts And Jovan Blagojevic hit an unbelievable goal from 40 yards out that lifted visiting Simon Fraser to a 1-0 win over a heart-broken NNU men’s soccer team Thursday evening. Alfredo E. Ontiveros made 3 saves in goal for NNU, which outshot the Clan, 12-10, but in the end it was the GNAC’s leading scorer who provided the difference for the Clan with one perfectly placed kick. The effect of the loss on the race to nationals is yet to be determined, but emotionally it lit a fire in the Crusaders, who came out and dominated Western Washington on Saturday, as NNU topped the Vikings 2-0. Juan Duevel scored off a league-leading 7th assist from Julio Castillo, then Perez NNU’s playmaker — Castillo —chipped in his first goal of the year to cap the win. Photo by Caity Pilgeram Ontiveros made 6 saves to earn his 7th shutout of the season, and 16th of his all-time Northwest Nazarene goalkeeper Alfredo E. Ontiveros lines up a goal kick on Saturday. record Crusader career. Helping lead the defense for NNU in both games was Juan Perez who was named GNAC Player of the Week. WOMEN’S SOCCER: The playoff chase ended unceremoniously with 3 minutes, 24 seconds left on the game-clock Thursday for the Crusader women when Western Oregon spoiled a dramatic NNU comeback. Leading 1-0 on a Nicole Nsa goal in the first half, the Crusaders found themselves rallying from a 2-1 deficit late, and down a player. Lexi Fesenbek set the single-season NNU record for assists with her 11th of the season, though, setting up Makena Dandley with the game-tying goal with 3:47 left. NNU’s celebration lasted just 23 seconds before Western Oregon scored for a 3-2 win, that, combined with wins by Montana State Billings and Central Washington, ended the Crusaders chance at a GNAC playoff berth. Disheartened, NNU couldn’t bounce back from the loss and fell 1-0 on Saturday as St. Martin’s scored the game’s lone goal with 9:04 left in regulation. Crusader goalkeeper Daniele Ortiz combined to make 11 saves in the two games for NNU.
