Heinz Haas

It comes but once a year — the season of sun, surf, and set

points — when the Hamptons becomes the hottest destination for tennis professionals, amateurs, and enthusiasts. And among those who find themselves courtside more than seaside this summer, one name has a grip on the East End tennis scene unlike anyone else: Heinz Haas. Ever since arriving from his native Sydney, Australia in 2001, this seasoned tennis professional has become a beloved staple of the Hamptons tennis community. USPTA Certified and with more than a decade of professional instruction experience at such prestigious tennis clubs as the Riviera Country Club in Los Angeles, Town Tennis Club, Manhattan Plaza Racquet Club, and the legendary Tennisport, Heinz also has been a practice partner for John McEnroe, among other tour players. Heinz first picked up a racquet at 14, yet he subsequently achieved a top 10 Australian junior national ranking. Heinz is an exemplar of hard work and love of the game. Competing in ATP/ ITF tournaments before transitioning to a full-time career serving an exceptional NYCand Hamptons-based clientele, Heinz’s reputation has grown to attract myriad celebrities, including Val Kilmer, Katie Couric, David Duchovny, Tommy Hilfiger, Stanley Tucci, and most recently, Jack Huston of “Boardwalk Empire,” recording artist Sir Ivan, and Ramona Singer of “The Real Housewives of New York City.” Heinz is sponsored by Head, the Austrian

tennis and ski company. In addition to recommending its performance-proven racquets, Heinz also avidly endorses its new tennis clothing line, which is available at Paragon Sports Store in Union Square and on tenniswarehouse.com. Hitting the sweet spot of his racquet as well as knowing the tennis sweet spots of the Hamptons, Heinz recommends visiting Sportime, Bath & Tennis, Buckskill Tennis Club, East Hampton Indoor Tennis (EHIT), Meadow Club, and Maidstone Club. Heinz also recommends Sag Harbor Park Tennis and Montauk Yacht Club, both managed by Annacone Tennis Management (ATM), owned and operated by Paul and Steve Annacone, and open to non-members. Paul formerly coached Pete Sampras and currently coaches Roger Federer. Heinz says, "To be the best, you have to learn from the best.” Social Life Magazine got in touch with this pro-athlete and manabout-town to find out who are this year’s hottest tennis pros in the Hamptons. Born in Malmo, Sweden, Fredrik Jonsson  started playing tennis at the Swedish National Tennis Academy when he was 10, and later became the No.1 junior (ages 14–18) in his home country. He won the European championship with the Swedish national team, played all four Grand Slams, was a member of the Swedish Davis Cup team, and reached the third round of the U.S. Open. After an eight-year ATP tour, becoming a top 100 in the ATP World ranking, Fred retired in 2004. He then taught at Tennisport before moving to New York's exclusive tennis and squash club, CityView Racquet Club in Long Island City. Vince Spadea has career wins over almost every top player in the world: Roger Federer, Pete Sampras, Andre Agassi, Rafael Nadal,

Andy Roddick, Richard Krajicek, Yevgeny Kafelnikov, to name a few. He represented Team USA at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney and in 2004 in Athens, and reached a career high 10th position in the ATP Champions Race in 2003, as well as a career high ATP World ranking of 18 in 2005. Currently residing in Los Angeles, Vince makes impromptu Hamptons appearances, often to get in some serious doubles action with his good friend Heinz, but prefers to say that he is “global.” Tim Lobello played his way through small international ATP events, before becoming a Hamptons tennis club darling. He landed a job as director of a highly prestigious club for the who’s who of Wall Street, but instead chose 20 of his best clients and some of the most talented professionals he knew to create his own business, built on trust and personal attention. He endeared himself so completely to his clients that Stephen Schwarzman, the “King of Wall Street,” convinced him to try his hand at finance. Tim has since carved out a new career for himself as the managing director of a top Manhattan-based commercial real estate firm. Marjan “Marian” Kaljaj is a humble professional. He grew up playing in Montenegro (in the former Yugoslavia) — the home of many tennis greats, including Novak Djokovic and Monica Seles — and says that at age 12, the racquet and ball became his best friend. Just three years later, to take his game to the next level, Marian moved to the United States to compete in juniors and Division I college tennis. After a post-graduation professional stint, Marian started teaching tennis, at 23, to support his career. Over the past nine years, he’s built a loyal clientele and currently instructs at the Tennis Club of Riverdale (TCR) in the Bronx, where he develops ranked juniors who compete in USTA national tournaments. Heinz regularly participates in charity and Pro-Am events and will be supporting Richard Branson’s famed Necker Cup Pro-Am Tennis Tournament, for which he is recruiting amateurs and sponsors.
