MONTICELLO HIGH SCHOOL VOLLEYBALL POLICIES Philosophy/Mission We believe volleyball, like all athletics, is a platform to reveal and refine character. As a coaching staff, we aspire to teach our athletes how to respond to both positive and negative circumstances and to respond to both simple tasks and difficult challenges in an appropriate competitive manner and through those experiences help them develop character that will guide them throughout their entire life. To excel and compete at a high level. Teach skills on a continuous basis throughout the program. Promote teamwork through respect and encouragement of one another. Expect discipline, commitment, and responsibility by being to practice on time, playing hard and demonstrating exceptional sportsmanship. Represent Monticello in a positive manner at all times and be proud to be part of the Magic team. Players as Role Models We all represent Monticello and the Monticello school system. Responsibility – We will follow all MSHSL chemical policies and team rules. Be responsible, have a plan B. Citizenship – What you do outside of volleyball is a reflection on the volleyball program. Honesty – Be honest with yourself, coaches and your parents. Integrity – Do what is right! Stand up for what you think is right. Community – Give back to the volleyball program; help out with younger girls. Nutrition – Strive to make healthy choices Give 100% every day whether at practice or matches. Be dedicated and show up. Accept constructive criticism – realizing our shortcomings is the first step toward improvement. Sportsmanship – players play, coaches coach, referees referee, and parents cheer Academics You must be passing your classes, have acceptable attendance, and no disciplinary incidents. Be sure to check the school policy and follow it closely. You may be asked to have your teachers fill out grade reports throughout the season. The activities office will also be monitoring your academics, attendance, and the appropriateness of your actions. If there is make-up work or tests, please schedule those before school or after school if time permits. Teams
We will have 5 squads of approximately 9-10 players if numbers permit. o Varsity (12th grade & younger) o Junior Varsity (11th grade & younger)
o B-Squad (10th grade & younger) o 9A (9th grade & younger) o 9B (9th grade & younger) Athletes will be placed on a team that fits their ability and fills the teams’ positional needs. Tryouts will be the first week of practice and will determine placement. If necessary, cuts will be made. We are looking for players with positive attitudes and solid athletic ability. We consider attitude, leadership ability, commitment, athletic ability and combinations of players to be what makes the best squads.
Playing Time This is a team sport with various positions and strategies that require different responsibilities from every individual player that are not measured by time but by individual strengths and strategy during each match. This means playing time is not equal. At the varsity level, it is possible that athletes may see little to no playing time during matches depending on the circumstances. Please understand, however, that no matter the position one plays or time in a match, that everything we execute as a team is equally important. Every player should take pride in what they contribute to the team. Attendance Your attendance matters. Missing practices and games will affect playing time. If you are going to miss a practice or a game, you must let the coach know personally, do not relay a message through other players. Please try to schedule doctor, dentist, ortho, etc. appointments before or after practice. These will not be an excuse to miss practice. Missed practices/games will be unexcused unless it is due to a family emergency, in that case please talk with your coach. If you are ill and can’t practice we would prefer if possible to have you sit and watch practice, so you will not miss important skills. If you are too ill to make it to practice, you need to talk to your coach, or a coach that works in the building if you leave early from school. Athletes who have an unexcused absence from a practice or game will not be allowed to start in one game in the next match. Attendance is very important in the development of athletes and teams. You must be in school the morning after a game. Injuries Your health is of the utmost importance. You need to be honest with yourself, your parent(s), the trainer, and your coach. If you are hurt, you need to let someone know (it will not get better if you continue to play hurt instead of getting it fixed). If you are out for a period of time due to doctor’s orders, you will need a doctor’s note giving permission to return to playing. If you are injured, you must attend all practices and games during the time you are unable to play, you do not have to dress for games, but you should sit with your
team bench (this is not time to do homework, you need to pay attention to what is happening). Practice
Plan for practice to take place every weekday that we do not have a game. Players are expected to be dressed, in the gym, nets up, and prepared to start practice at the time designated by their coach. Bring your own water bottle with your name written on it. All bags and personal items must be kept in team locker room. You need to bring your own lock. Appropriate shorts and shirts must be worn. Athletic shoes and socks Knee pads (players must provide their own) No jewelry
