Team Handbook 2016-2017
The Mountain View High School Swim & Dive Team Handbook 2016-2017
Introduction This handbook is intended to make our swimming and diving team parents’ lives a little easier. Look it over carefully and refer to it often during the swim/dive season as it contains information you will need from week to week. The handbook will be available on our website: http://www.mvswimdive.com
Parent Communication To better communicate with our parents, the Bears are utilizing email and our website. Swimmers, divers and parents should check the team web site at: http://www.mvswimdive.com for current team information. There is additional information on the County Booster Club website at http://www.gwinnettswimdive.org . You will receive emails from the head coach on a weekly basis. Please email Coach Emmanuel or Coach Monteon if you are not receiving her emails. There is also a Remind set up specifically for parents and athletes. There is an app, or you can choose to receive the information via text message or email. Athletes: To sign up for Athlete Reminds text @mvhsswim to 81010 Parents: To sign up for Parent Reminds text @mvhsswimp to 81010 Email is the best way for parents to communicate with the coaches. Athlete Communication Athletes should keep in contact with the coaches concerning practice and meet attendance, meet events, injuries, etc. It is the responsibility of the athlete to communicate with coaches in a timely manner regarding any concerns or questions. Volunteers Swim meets would not be possible without a lot of volunteers. We will be calling on your help at the meets both at home and away. The success of our team depends upon parental support and involvement. All families who participate have work assignments- we make every effort to distribute the work load fairly. Work assignments will be published in advance by our Volunteer Coordinator and Booster President Jennifer Wigle. When you receive your assignments, please review them and note the dates and times you are assigned to work. If you cannot work the position that has been assigned, it is your responsibility to switch assignments with someone who is willing to fill in or trade with you. Then you should notify the Volunteer Coordinator (Jennifer Wigle) about the change. Thank you for helping make our swim/dive team a success! We will try to honor everyone’s work request; however, it was not always possible. If you did not indicate a position, we placed you where needed. Academic Eligibility Georgia High School State Rules stipulate that a student must be enrolled in at least 5 courses per semester and have passed at least 5 courses the previous semester, as well as being on track to graduate, in order to be eligible to participate in any sports or extracurricular activities sponsored by the high school. Swimming and diving are doubly affected because the season occurs during both semesters. Academic ineligibility during either fall or spring semester will result in removal from the team. The coaches are available to help you come up with a plan to be successful in your classes. You will not letter if you are dropped due to academic ineligibility. Guidelines for Using Pools The pool cannot be responsible for property left in the locker rooms. Swimmers and divers are advised to use a locker with a lock or bring their belongings on deck. Swimmers and divers should not bring food, or deface anything in the pool and locker area. Teams will be responsible for damages incurred during usage. Swimmers, divers and parents are reminded that the use of pools is conditional on good conduct and in neighborhoods where pools are located. Students and teams may lose the privilege of pool use when inappropriate conduct is displayed. 2016-2017 Team Rules: 1. 90% attendance at practice. See attendance policy for more information. 2. Attend all meets. Any meet absence must be emailed to Coach Emmanuel with a 2-week notice minimum. The athlete will be notified if an absence is excused or unexcused. You are required to ride the bus to and from all meets when applicable. When you are at a meet you must stay in the team area until the meet is over. Only Mountain View swimmers and divers may be in the team area. 3. Missed events result in disqualification from the remainder of the meet, excluding relays. 4. All school rules apply at all times. 5. Respect for fellow team members, coaches, officials, opponents, school and aquatic facilities and equipment is expected. Sportsmanlike conduct is required. 6. All athletes must sign an Athlete Code of Conduct Agreement and a concussion-information form per GHSA on the physical. Violation of the rules may result in one or more of the following: 1. Benched for a meet, but you must attend the meet but cannot compete. 2. Removal from the team. Note: There will be no refunds made to athletes who have been dropped from the team due to ineligibility, infractions or missed meets.
Practice Attendance Policy Attendance and participation in practice is important for success in any sport. We require 90% attendance at practices to participate in meets. Arriving 15 minutes late or leaving more than 15 minutes early results in an absence. If an athlete drops below 90% at the checkpoints, they will not be eligible to compete. Any practice absence due to sickness, prior commitments, doctor’s appointments, etc. must be emailed to Coach Emmanuel prior to the absence. Injuries require a note from either the school’s athletic trainer or doctor, but injured athletes are still expected to attend practice. The only excused absence from practices is a competing fall sport, academic extracurricular event and any illness that prevents the athlete from attending school. Absences for any other reason may only be excused at head coach’s discretion. USA swimmers/divers may attend their USA practices in lieu of their high school practices, but are expected to maintain the same standard of attendance. Those swimmers/divers must provide Coach Emmanuel their USA coach’s name, number and email address via an email at least one week prior the first practice of the season. Please remember that absences from practice may result in ineligibility to compete and/or letter. We will have practice the Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday before Thanksgiving and on several days during Winter Break. A schedule for these practices will be posted at a later date. Meet Attendance Policy Athletes are expected to attend and participate in all meets. All athletes must stay on deck through the last event. Notice of an absence must be emailed to Coach Emmanuel at least two weeks in advance. Absences will be excused at the discretion of the coaches. You are still expected to attend the meet even if you are not competing due to an ongoing illness (provided you are not contagious) or injury. Lettering Policy A swimmer can letter when they meet the following requirements: - At least 90% practice attendance and participation - Attend & compete in all meet unless excused by the Head Coach - Qualify for at least one individual county event and participate in the county meet OR Earn a total number of points for the team throughout the season (point total TBD). - Athletes who have participated and have met all team requirements for 4 years at Mountain View High School can also letter. Practices Tentative Practice Information: Swim practices will be held at Collins Hill Aquatic Center. Dryland begins at 4:30 pm and we enter the pool promptly at 5:00 pm. All swimmers and divers will practice on assigned days. Dive practice is held Monday and Wednesday 7:30-10:00 pm at Bogan Park pool. If school is canceled for inclement weather etc there will be no practice. USA swimmers/divers may attend their club practices in lieu of high school practices; however, they are expected to maintain the same standard of attendance and must attend all team meetings and must provide coaches names and numbers to verify same, see above under “Attendance”. There may be conflicts with the scheduled practices/meets if you are involved in a fall sport or other activity. Please discuss conflicts with the Coach Emmanuel at least a week before practice begins to avoid any penalties. This courtesy will also extend to your involvement in spring sports or activities. Athletes, please email Coach Emmanuel with fall schedule conflicts; include athlete’s name and conflicting dates.
Diving Rules
Divers are responsible for being ready to dive when their dive is announced. Just like swimmers, divers will risk being DQ’d from the event if they are not ready when it is their turn to compete. Diving will be events #9 and #10. Divers will be expected to stay for the entire swim meet, even though their event will be fully completed. Team unity is a crucial element to which everyone contributes whether their events are finished or not.
What to Bring to the Swim Meets All swimmers and divers must wear the mandatory suit and warm up suit to every meet. Suggested items: - 2-3 towels - Healthy snacks - Water - Electrolyte sport drink - Extra goggles - Extra caps - Clothes for in between events, like sweats and t-shirts. **Be careful with electronic devices. You are responsible for them.
Warm- Ups Diving and swimming warm-ups will occur at the same time. The warm-up period will be 15-20 minutes in length (unless all coaches agree to modify based on having a long time period for a meet). There will be an additional 10 minute warm-up between the 50 free and the 100 fly, right after diving. Apparel Swimmers are required to wear a team suit and authorized cap (if a cap is worn) in all meets. Do not wear apparel other than the team apparel as it is a rules violation that will result in disqualification. *Also, any jewelry, including earrings, bracelets, or even a hair elastic worn around the wrist is highly discouraged. Buses When buses are provided for meets, all swimmers/divers must ride the team buses to and from meets. Buses will load and unload in front of the high school and the times will be communicated to athletes and parents.
