MULTIGENERATIONAL SERVICE FOR CHRISTMAS EVE December 24, 2017

4:00 p.m.

CENTERING THOUGHT On a night long ago, in a place far away, a baby was born on the first Christmas Day. His name was Jesus, a tiny wee king, and he came to the world to change everything. Let’s go to Bethlehem and see, the baby that came to love you and me. Come to the stable and gather around, the manger where baby Jesus is found. Come all you children and hear this story, of a tiny baby who would grow into a King of Glory.  *Those who are able, please stand. Congregation responds in bold. Please, silence your cell phones before worship begins.

‘Twas in the Moon of Wintertime

UNE JEUNE PUCELLE Bel Canto

‘Twas in the moon of winter time, when all the birds had fled, That mighty Gitchi Manitou sent angel choirs instead. Before their light the stars grew dim and wandering hunters heard the hymn: Refrain: Jesus, your king is born; Jesus is born. In excelsis Gloria. Within a lodge of broken bark the tender babe was found. A ragged robe of rabbit skin enwrapped his beauty round. But as the hunters brave drew nigh the angel song rang loud and high; Refrain The earliest moon of wintertime is not so round and fair As was the ring of glory on the helpless infant there. The chiefs from far before him knelt with gifts of fox and beaver pelt. Refrain O children of the forest free, O seed of Manitou, The holy child of earth and heaven is born today for you. Come kneel before the radiant boy who brings you beauty, peace, and joy. Refrain

LISTENING FOR GOD’S WORD The Prophecy (Isaiah 7: 14, 9:2, 11: 1-2) Hymn

Reader: Lela Sibley

O Come, O Come, Emmanuel

O come, O come, Emmanuel, and ransom captive Israel. That mourns in lonely exile here until the Son of God appear. Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel. O come, O come, thou Lord of might, who to thy tribes on Sinai’s height In ancient times didst give the law in cloud and majesty and awe. Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel. Advent Candle 1 — Candle of Hope The Annunciation (Luke 1 25-38; Matthew 1: 18-25) Reader: Emma Longo Gabriel: Michael Longo Hymn

O Little Town of Bethlehem

O little town of Bethlehem, how still we see thee lie! Above thy deep and dreamless sleep the silent stars go by. Yet in thy dark streets shineth the everlasting light;

the hopes and fears of all the years are met in thee tonight. For Christ is born of Mary and gathered all above, while mortals sleep, the angels keep their watch of wondering love. O morning stars, together proclaim the holy birth, and praises sing to God the king, and peace to all on earth. Advent Candle 2 — Candle of Peace When the Baby Jesus Came When the baby Jesus came down from heaven high above He came to save all men with his boundless, endless love. When Mary bore our Lord angels sang while shepherds cried, the Lord our Savior is born: and in his glory we abide. When God sent his Son to man to teach us how to live, the world burned bright with joy from the love God did give.

When it is Christmas time our souls are at ease. For Jesus Christ our Lord brings us holy peace. The Birth (Luke 2: 1-7) Hymn

Reader: Lauren Schmahl

What Child Is This

What child is this, who laid to rest, on Mary’s lap is sleeping? Whom angels greet with anthems sweet while shepherds watch are keeping? This, this is Christ the King, whom shepherds guard and angels sing; Haste, haste to bring him laud, the babe, the son of Mary! So bring him incense, gold and myrrh; come, one and all, to own him. The King of kings salvation brings; let loving hearts enthrone him. Raise, raise the song on high. The virgin sings her lullaby. Joy, joy, for Christ is born, the babe, the son of Mary! Advent Candle 3 — Candle of Love

The Shepherds and Angel (Luke 2: 8-20) Reader: Emma Longo Angel of the Lord: Michael Longo Go Tell It on the Mountain

Hymn

John W. Work Celebration Choir

The First Nowell The first Nowell the angel did say was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay, in fields where they lay keeping their sheep, on a cold winter’s night that was so deep. Refrain: Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, born is the king of Israel. They looked up and saw a star shining in the east beyond them far; and to the earth it gave great light, and so it continued both day and night. Refrain

The Shepherds and Angels Reader: Kate Robinson Angels: Lauren and Caroline Robinson

Hymn

Away in a Manager

Away in a manger, no crib for his bed, The little Lord Jesus laid down his sweet head. The stars in the bright sky looked down where he lay, the little Lord Jesus asleep on the hay. The cattle are lowing; the poor baby wakes, but little Lord Jesus, no crying he makes. I love thee, Lord Jesus; look down from the sky, and stay by my side until morning is nigh. Advent Candle 4 — Candle of Joy The Prophecy Fulfilled (Isaiah 9: 6-7) Reader: Andrew de las Alas Lighting of the Christ Candle *Hymn

Joy to the World

Joy to the word, the Lord is come! Let earth receive her king; let every heart prepare him room, and heaven and nature sing, and heaven and nature sing, and heaven, and heaven and nature sing. He rules the world with truth and grace, and makes the nations prove the glories of his righteousness and wonders of his love,

and wonders of his love, and wonders, wonders of his love. RESPONDING TO GOD Prayers of the People The Lord’s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come; thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. Offering

I Wonder As I Wander

African American Spiritual Bel Canto I wonder as I wander, out under the sky, how Jesus the Savior did come for to die for poor orn’ry people like you and like I; I wonder as I wander, out under the sky. When Mary birthed Jesus, ‘twas in a cow’s stall, with wise men and farmers and shepherds and all, but high from God’s heaven a star’s light did fall, the promise of ages it then did recall.

If Jesus had wanted for any wee thing, a star in the sky or a bird on the wing, or all of God’s angels in heaven for to sing, he surely could have it, ‘cause he was the king. Prayer of Thanksgiving GOING FORTH *Hymn

Silent Night

(You are invited to turn on your battery candle or have your wax candle lit by a HOST as a symbol of the light of Christ. Please tilt your unlit candle toward the flame.) Silent Night, holy night! All is calm, all is bright ‘round yon virgin mother and child! Holy Infant, so tender and mild, sleep in heavenly peace, sleep in heavenly peace. Silent night, holy night! Shepherds quake, at the sight; glories stream from heaven afar, heavenly hosts sign “Alleluia: Christ the Savior is born; Christ the Savior is born!” Silent night, holy night! Son of God, love’s pure light radiant beams from thy holy face, with the dawn of redeeming grace, Jesus, Lord, at thy birth, Jesus, Lord, at thy birth.

Silent night, holy night! Wondrous star, lend thy light; with the angels let us sing Alleluia to our King: Christ the Savior is born; Christ the Savior is born. *Benediction Good News! . . . said the angel to Mary. God has chosen you to bring a savior to the world. Good News! . . . said the angel to Joseph. Mary will have a baby, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will be a savior for all people, everywhere. Good News! . . . sang the angels as they gathered. A Savior has been born and he will bring great joy for all the people. Good News! . . . said the shepherds to each other. We’d better hurry to Bethlehem and see what God has done. Good News! . . . we say today. Tonight we remember the coming of Jesus into our world. Let us celebrate. Jesus is here! Good news! Amen!
