After attending the interiors show, imm Cologne, as part of the KBDi International Tour, certified designers Darren Genner and Darren James share their thoughts on international design trends shaping interiors in 2015

IT’S ALL NATURAL

BY SHAUNA O’CARROLL Winners of the KBDi Designer Awards in 2014 for their original designs, Darren Genner (CKD Au) and Darren James (CKD Au), know innovative and creative design when they see it. Last January, they had the opportunity to travel to Europe as part of the KBDi Designers International Tour 2015, where they gained a glimpse into the future of design at the imm Cologne trade fair in the internationally renowned art and culture metropolis of Cologne, Germany. imm Cologne is the first big international interiors show of the year. It presents the trends that will shape interior design in the new year, from the basics to designer goods and luxury furnishings. The fair features ideas from designers around the world to suit every style, taste and budget. This year saw designers return to their natural roots. Organic materials, natural finishes, and tailored and handmade qualities were strong within the showcased designs. The organic and simple look showed designers are turning to nature for inspiration — a refreshing change from the sleek and modern styles of recent years. “All materials were showcased in their most natural form — raw in some cases — adding real depth and character,” says Genner. This natural theme was also highlighted through the use of greenery as a decorative element: herb gardens installed in kitchens and pops of colour in vivid green shades. The green hue was intensified through its combination with muted, soft, neutral tones, while white still proved to be the most popular colour among designers. Also popular was utilising materials in their organic form, particularly waxed or oiled natural timber in blond oak or walnut with metallic accents. “We are seeing real wood make a strong reappearance in the market, offering a lot of warmth and texture that veneer cannot,” adds Genner. Materials such as glass and stone were used for benchtops and accents in natural finishes with dark, moody colours. Designers appear to be moving towards creating a thinner, more refined benchtop — a style innovation that proved a popular idea among design industry experts. “The thinner, the better!” says James. “Kitchen design is definitely moving towards more refined detail that allows the texture of the products themselves to tell the story.”
