Session Objectives 1. Provide a history and rationale for development and validation of standards for personnel preparation of educators for children birth through age 8 with disabilities or developmental delays (L2, 11) 2. Discuss the validation process for initial and advanced DEC specialty set statements(L7, 11) 3. Identify uses for the DEC specialty set and supporting literature in Institutes of Higher Education (IHEs) and Professional Development (PD) efforts (L10) 4. Brainstorm resource needs for application of the DEC specialty set and supportive literature in IHEs and PD efforts (L10)

Related DEC Recommended Practices (2014) • L2 Leaders promote adherence to and model the DEC Code of Ethics, DEC position statements and papers, and the DEC recommended practices. • L7 Leaders develop, refine, and implement policies and procedures that create the condition for practitioners to implement the DEC recommended practices. • L10 Leaders ensure practitioners know and follow professional standards. • L11 Leaders collaborate with higher education, state certification and licensing agencies, practitioners, professional associations and other stakeholders to develop or revise state competencies that align with DEC, CEC and other national professional standards.
