After studying the film on the jamboree, Dushane was happy with a handful of individual performances, particularly along the offensive and defensive lines. “From our standpoint, we felt like Brodie Bien had a very good jamboree on both offense and defense. Caleb James at offensive tackle did a great job,” Dushane said. “Defensively, I felt like our defensive line did a very good job and our linebackers really stepped up. Our secondary didn’t have many balls thrown at them, so we weren’t really able to evaluate.”

KEYS TO VICTORY ON OFFENSE… Look for No. 34 early and often Friday night against Liberal. Junior fullback Zach Renfro scorched Liberal for 137 yards and two touchdowns last year as the Wildcats rolled up 313 yards on the ground in a 24-0 win. There’s no change in the game plan this year. ON DEFENSE… The Pistol offense is rarely seen in smaller schools, but Diamond will see it Friday night. Coach Jimmy Dushane expects Liberal to run right a lot, and says maintaining assignments is the key to victory for Diamond.

SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER Bien takes over as the full time quarterback in 2012 after splitting time with departed senior Tyler Horton last season. Bien threw for 196 yards and ran for 140 last season. Another notable position change is sophomore Tanner Paradies moving from linebacker to defensive end. Junior defensive back Jordan Divine returns in 2012 after leading an opportunistic Wildcats defense with four interceptions. If Liberal decides to throw the ball, watch out – Diamond recorded at least one interception in the first nine games of the season last year.

A Diamond opportunity After landmark 2011 season, can the Wildcats break through DIAMOND – The Diamond Wildcats had one of their best seasons ever in 2011. They went 4-6 and missed the playoffs by one game. Friday, they have a tremendous opportunity to build on that success, while also experiencing a new beginning under first-year head coach Jimmy Dushane, when they face the Liberal Bulldogs. Junior running back/linebacker Zach Renfro is hoping to duplicate, or even improve, on the game he put up last season against Liberal. As a sophomore, Renfro ran for 137 yards and two

Diamond (0-0) at Liberal (0-0) 7 p.m. Friday touchdowns on offense and tallied seven tackles and an interception on defense vs. the Bulldogs. Diamond beat Liberal 24-0 last season and racked up 313 yards on the ground in the contest. “Zach has looked really good,”

Dushane said. “We didn’t play him Friday at the jamboree due to an illness. But, he’s back and he’ll be good to go Friday night.” Renfro ran for 1,199 yards and 12 touchdowns in 2011. Logan DeWitt, who scored a touchdown at the jamboree could also see carries and quarterback Brodie Bien should also have a handful of carries. On offense, Liberal runs the Pistol offense, made famous by Chris Ault at the University of Nevada. It’s a formation rarely used at smaller schools and Dushane knows that learning to de-

fend that offensive set is objective No. 1 in getting ready for the Bulldogs. “They really like to run out of the pistol and we just need to be ready to know what our keys are,” Dushane said. “We need to know our responsibilities. Their tailback is very capable of breaking a long run and their quarterback makes good choices. Their offensive line on the right side is a strength for them, their right guard and right tackle are definitely their best linemen.” SEE DIAMOND, PAGE 15

Cats face tough opener Class 4 power Bolivar visits Friday night NEOSHO — Football returns to Bob Anderson Stadium on Friday as the Neosho Wildcats begin the 2012 campaign against the Class 4 powerhouse Bolivar Liberators. Bolivar will be led onto the field by their junior signal caller who has turned heads nationally over the summer. “They’ve got a kid in Rafe Peavey who is a division I quarterback going to Arkansas,” Neosho football coach Jared Schoonover said. “So they will be able to throw the football very well. Last year, he was just a sophomore starting his first varsity game, now he’s got a full year under his belt and he really has control of that offense.” Peavey is a four-star recruit accord-

ing to ESPN.com. But their offensive firepower isn’t exclusive to the quarterback. Bolivar returns senior running back Kolby Follis

from 2011. Follis ran for 1,060 yards and 17 touchdowns as a junior, including 76 yards and two scores against Neosho. “They’ve still got a ton of speed and they can get around the edge,” Schoonover said. “Peavey himself runs a 4.5 (40-yard dash). So they will still have the ability to run the ball. They will be just as multiple as they were a year ago even without Darnell Walker. They’re just as potent as last year and we will have to make the adjustments for what they have.” Neosho will look to counter that speed with a pair of speedsters of their own at safety. Schoonover: “We have to play well in space and make sure the first man to the ball stops the ball carrier at the point of contact. We need to get some three-and-outs and we have to win the field position game. That’s the scenario that gives us the best chance.”

I Speed aplenty

While Bolivar boasts of having a lot of speed, the Wildcats hope to match them step for step. Ryan Taylor won the district 400 meter title in the spring and is flanked by junior Justin McKee in the defensive backfield.

off his district title in the 400-meter dash and junior Justin McKee will start in the defensive backfield. With all that speed on the field at once for Bolivar, the Liberators will certainly be looking for mismatches in open space against the Wildcats. The key to stopping them seems simple enough, but it’s harder than it sounds against the athletes Bolivar is sending to Neosho. “Number one, we have to tackle well,” Schoonover said. “We have to play well in space and make sure the first man to the ball stops the ball carrier at the point of contact. We need to get some three-and-outs and we have to win the field position game. That’s the scenario that gives us the best chance.” Linebackers Christian Lopez, Chris Goodwin, Dayton Bolton and Tyler Pearson will need to be fundamentally solid as well, as Bolivar runs a lot of misdirection out of their split back sets. Offensively, Schoonover feels that this year’s team is capable of being more multiple than the 2011 edition of Neosho

NEOSHO DAILY NEWS | WEEK 1 EDITION | 8.23.12 football. But, despite the spread look they show, it all starts with a solid running game. “The biggest key for us on offense is simply to move the ball,” Schoonover said. “We have to get first downs. Any game starts with turnovers, we need to win the turnover battle and that starts with us protecting the football. We have to move the chains and we have to score in the red zone. We are a run oriented team and we have to make sure we put ourselves in third-and-short situations as opposed to third-andseven, third-and-eight.” Seniors Lopez and Taylor, juniors Goodwin and Davin Bentz and sophomore Bolton will all likely get carries for Neosho. Also, look for quarterbacks McKee and Austin Hailey to tote the ball as well. While the Bolivar quarterback provides plenty of hype for the Neosho home opener, Schoonover says his team is just anxious to get back on the field. “We are just excited for the opportunity to play against a team that could be vying for a state championship in a few months,” Schoonover said. “Throughout the year, we play at least two teams we are playing two state championship caliber teams for sure. Any time you go into a game like that, it’s a big opportunity to get better and a chance to grow.”

KEYS TO VICTORY ON OFFENSE… The Mac County Mustangs are a running team, period. Fortunately, they have a returning 1,200-yard rusher in Jantzen Lynn to carry the load this year. His success will depend largely on the play of the big guys up front, as well as fullbacks Travis Meador and Josh Serr. ON DEFENSE… Lamar brings a vaunted offensive attack to town Friday night. The Tigers’ ground game is based on misdirection, and demands disciplined play from the Mustang defense. “The linebackers need to stay at home and make sure to play assignment football,” said Mustang coach Chris Gwartney. “If you play out of position, they are going to break off a big play.”

Ground game key, again Lynn will lead Mac County attack in 2012 By Jesse Cordova Daily News Sports Editor

ANDERSON – Last fall, the Lamar Tigers won a state championship. This fall, their title defense begins with a trip to Anderson to take on the McDonald County Mustangs. The Mustangs, coming off of a 2-8 season a year ago, will rely heavily on the running game this fall. “We are going to need to be able to run the ball,” McDonald County football coach Chris Gwartney said. “We are go-

ing to have to be physical up front and be able to move the ball on the ground for us to be successful.” Jantsen Lynn, a returning senior tailback, went for 1,282 yards and seven scores in 2011 and will be the focal point of the Mustangs’ attack this fall. But, the success of the McDonald County running game will start in front of Lynn with his offensive line and his lead blockers. “Number one, our fullbacks have to block well for us,” Gwartney said. “They don’t get to carry the ball as much as

our running backs, but they’ve got to have big games. Those guys are Travis Meador and Josh Serr.” The passing game was effective at times last season with departed seniors Cody Hobbs at quarterback and Chance Buttram at receiver. This year, Zack Peck – who caught 17 passes for 401 yards and five scores in 2011 – will be the focus of the passing game. “I don’t know if we have an advantage necessarily, but Zack Peck could be an X-Factor,” Gwartney said. “He’s 6-feet-3 and 180 pounds. He runs well and can really jump, so we are going to try and get the ball into his hands on offense. We think he can create some mismatches for us.” A new signal caller, sophomore Jake Wood, will be responsible for getting Peck the football. Wood was impressive this summer during 7-on-7 and connected with Peck on a score during the jamboree. Defensively, McDonald County will have its hands full with a very explosive Lamar rushing attack. “They lost Markell White, but they still have two very good running backs and their quarterback is a threat as

“Lamar uses so much misdirection, and if you play out of position they are going to break off a big play.” - Chris Gwartney Mac County Head Coach

well,” Gwartney said. “They have three guys back there who are very good. And their offense can really create a lot of problems for a defense. We need to stop the run.” Stopping the run on defense begins up front with Drey Fickle and all-area returner Jordan Moffett at the defensive tackle positions. “Our front four have to do a good job leaving our linebackers free,” Gwartney said. “The linebackers need to stay at home and make sure to play assignment football. Lamar uses so much misdirection, and if you play out of position they are going to break off a big play.” Metters, Serr and Michael Long will likely start at linebacker for McDonald County.

KEYS TO VICTORY ON OFFENSE…

Offensive line play is a huge factor in any success the Patriots will have this season. So far, so good. Johnson likes what he has seen in practice and preseason scrimmages. The running backs, Ross Nagel, Ian Plemmons and Jimmy Stockton, are all relative newcomers on offense.

ON DEFENSE…

“Obviously, the big play (is something we have to contain). Springfield Catholic likes to run the ball and they run it very well. They try to lull you to sleep and then go over the top with the tight ends. They’ve done that forever and they’ve had success with it.” - Seth Johnson

Springfield Catholic said goodbye to a stellar running back in Nick Gori after last season, but don’t expect that to slow down a consistent Irish attack. Springfield Catholic doesn’t play the most exciting brand of football on offense, but they are always dangerous according to Johnson. “Obviously, the big play (is something we have to contain),” Johnson said. “Springfield Catholic likes to run the ball and they run it very well. We’ve got to do a good job of tackling and contain him.” Beckner ran for 1,657 yards and 23 touchdowns in 2011, leading Carthage to a 7-4 record and a playoff appearance. Offensively, Seneca returns a solid runner of its own in Marty Mailes. The returning senior at tailback went for more than 1,400 yards and 17 touchdowns in 2011 and will be leaned on heavily this fall. “We are obviously going to depend a lot on Marty, but we’ve got to keep them off balance,” Scheible said. “We’ve got to be able to do things that are unpredictable. We talk about that every week. But I think Marty is a big key, but also Payton Rawlins is a big key.

They’ve done that forever and they’ve had success with it.” - Seth Johnson

plays in the kicking game, that’s huge. Last year, we gave up a punt return for a touchdown and you can’t do that and expect to win football games.” Thomas handled kicking/punting duties for the Patriots in 2011 as a freshman.

“They lost Markell White, but they still have two very good running backs and their quarterback is a threat as

well,” Gwartney said. Lamar uses so much misdirection, and if you play out of position they are going to break off a big play.” Metters, Serr and Michael Long will likely start at linebacker for McDonald County.

off his district title in the 400-meter dash and junior Justin McKee will start in the defensive backfield.
