The Sectional Appendix covering the Northern part of the [NW Route was last updated in October 2006. This re-issue (October 2009) brings it up to date by capturing all the changes that have been carried in Periodical Operating Notices since that time. Ov erv i ew o f this A ppendi x

Because the nature of the infrastructure on the Route is constantly changing this Appendix must to be kept up to date to reflect that. Updating can be achieved in a number of ways. Updating using the Weekly Operating Notice (WON) On a weekly basis Network Rail publish a WON that supports this Appendix. I t catalogues all the changes that have taken place on the Route and the impact that has on this document. T he changes shown in the WON should be transferred directly into this Appendix by what ever means the holder sees fit. Updating using the Periodic Operati ng Notic e (P ON) Every eight weeks Network Rail bri ngs together the detail requi red to update the Appendix previously printed in the W ON (ov er that same peri od) and publishes it in a P ON. T o update the Appendix from the P ON the hol der must trans fer the information directly into it. Unl i k e the W ON, the P ON is c reated in such a way that it allows pages to remov ed directly from it and substituted for those in the Appendix that are to be amended. Th i s is k nown as "page replac ement" updating and offers significant benefits to the hol der of the Appendix, n o t least the s peed with which it c an be updated Updates in the P ON will be published repeatedl y until such ti me that a "Suppl ement" to the Appendix is issued or the Appendix is completely reissued. Updating using a Suppl ement At regul ar intervals this Appendix will be updated via a 'Suppl ement'. Subscribers to the P ON will automatically receive any Supplements issued. Supplements bring together all the appropri ate information c arried in the P ON that is requi red to update the Appendix and pres ent it in one eas y to use 'repl ac ement pac k age'. I t should b e noted that once a Suppl ement has been issued the information it contains is not repri nted in the P ON. The Nati onal Electronic Sectional Appendix (NE S A ) Network Rail has c reated an electronic version of this and all the other Appendices that cover the network in the form of an electronic database. A c c es s to the NESA negates the need to update an Appendix using a P ON o r a Suppl ement given that it is essentially updated in "real time".
