  New  Charter  High  School  Receives  Final  Approval  and  Announces  Site  Location     Oxford  Preparatory  High  School  received  final  charter  approval  at  Thursday’s  State   Board  of  Education  meeting  in  Raleigh  and  will  be  the  first  charter  high  school  in  the  region   when  it  opens  in  August.    This  approval  was  the  culmination  of  a  year  long  application  and   approval  process,  during  which  the  Board  held  monthly  public  meetings,  hosted  more  than  10   community  interest  meetings,  and  participated  in  seven  days  of  charter  school  training  in   Raleigh.    With  this  endorsement,  the  school  has  now  released  applications  for  student   enrollment  for  next  school  year.    Families  of  rising  9th  grade  students  can  complete  the   application  available  on  the  school’s  website  (www.oxfordprephs.org)  and  mail  the  form  in  by   the  April  8th  deadline.     Coinciding  with  the  charter  approval,  the  Board  of  Directors  has  announced,  after  a  year   of  investigation,  the  school  will  be  located  at  a  scenic  site  just  outside  the  city  limits  of  Oxford   on  Landis  Rd.,  near  the  Salem  Rd.  intersection.    Currently,  this  is  an  undeveloped  site  that   allows  generous  room  for  growth  and  provides  convenient  access  to  families  in  Oxford,   Henderson,  and  beyond.    Site  development  is  expected  to  begin  in  May,  and  the  temporary   modular  campus  will  be  installed  by  July  1st.    The  school  will  operate  out  of  the  modular  campus   for  the  first  two  years.    The  school  plans  to  open  the  2015  –  2016  school  year  in  a  permanent   facility  on  the  same  site.   About  OPHS:   Oxford  Preparatory  High  School  (OPHS)  is  an  independent  public  charter  high  school   that  is  designed  to  mold  students  into  future  leaders  through  completion  of  a  rigorous   curriculum  while  focusing  on  community  service  and  developing  an  appreciation  of  the  arts.  In   order  to  prepare  each  student  to  attend  the  college  of  his  or  her  choice,  OPHS  will  cultivate   intellectual  curiosity  by  engaging  students  in  critical  thinking  and  experiential  learning.  The   school  is  committed  to  serving  the  surrounding  communities  of  Granville  and  Vance  Counties   and  to  reflect  the  area’s  diversity  in  terms  of  gender,  socioeconomic  status,  and  ethnicity.    The   school  will  open  with  100  ninth  grade  students  this  August.   Community  Meeting  Details:   Oxford  –  Thursday,  3/21  at  6:30pm  –  Richard  Thornton  Library  (Large  Meeting  Room)

March  8th  –  Applications  released  for  student  enrollment  on  the  school’s  website   (www.oxfordprephs.org)  and  available  by  hardcopy  at  the  public  library  locations  in   Creedmoor,  Henderson,  and  Oxford.     April  8th  -­‐  All  applications  must  be  postmarked  by  this  date  to  be  entered  into  the   enrollment  lottery  (if  more  than  110  applications  are  received).     April  11th  -­‐  If  a  lottery  is  required,  a  public  lottery  will  be  held  at  6:00  p.m.  in  the   gymnasium  of  Masonic  Home  for  Children.  

Frequently  Asked  Questions   Q:  What  is  a  charter  school?   A:  A  charter  school  provides  parents  with  a  choice  in  the  education  of  their  children.    The   schools  have  open  enrollment  with  no  discrimination,  no  religious  association,  and  no  tuition.   Q:  How  much  would  it  cost  to  attend  OPHS?   A:  Charter  schools  are  tuition  free.    Public  tax  dollars  are  the  primary  funding  sources  for   charter  schools.    Local,  state,  and  federal  dollars  follow  the  child  to  a  charter  school.   Q:  How  is  OPHS  different  than  other  schools  in  the  area?   A:  OPHS  is  not  only  centered  on  a  college  preparatory  curriculum  but  has  a  unique  focus  on  the   arts  and  community  service  in  order  to  develop  well-­‐rounded  students.   Q:  Do  you  have  to  live  in  Oxford  or  Granville  County  to  attend  OPHS?   A:  No.    As  a  NC  charter  school,  Oxford  Preparatory  would  be  open  to  any  student  who  is   domiciled  in  North  Carolina.    If  there  are  more  applicants  than  spaces,  a  blind  public  lottery  will   be  held.   Q:  Will  OPHS  offer  athletic  programs  for  its  students?   A:  Yes;  at  first,  only  a  few  JV  sports  would  be  offered  (i.e.  men's/women's  soccer),  but   additional  programs  will  be  added  with  demand  and  availability  of  facilities.   Q:  How  can  I  receive  information  about  employment?   A:  All  positions,  descriptions,  and  application  procedures  are  posted  on  the  school’s  website   www.oxfordprephs.org  .
