NEW SPACE IN USE Exploring Learning in the New Wing It’s a sunny, Friday afternoon in November and Grade 6 boys are not looking longingly out the window. Instead, they are clustered in small, animated groups spread throughout the classroom, having discussions and writing observations on the walls. This is a common scene in the new wing. “It’s the type of inquiry-based learning that we are now able to offer intermediate boys,” says Tyler Meakin, Grade 6 homeroom teacher. Boys were shown two maps from a New York Times article: one representing Clinton’s America and the other representing Trump’s America. They observed that the maps were quite different and asked a number of provocative questions. Based on these questions, boys conducted research using iPads and learned that the populations in both maps were similar, while Trump’s had significantly more land mass. A robust discussion around the implications of this ensued.   “Thanks to Building Leaders, we can pursue this exploratory learning. We have the space to break into small groups, we have the adaptable furniture and we have the writable walls to capture each boy’s input into the discussion. It all works together to create exciting new learning opportunities.” Tyler’s colleagues agree. “The abundant, creative new spaces in the wing allow the boys to spread out and find their preferred place for individual or group work,” says Kimberly Lynch, Grade 7 teacher.  “The spaces allow the boys to work in the style that suits each of them, and helps to ensure that they’re working at their best.” Another homeroom teacher, Laura Medcalf in Grade 6, recently shared photos of boys perched in nooks and crannies in the hallway with the caption: “Why I love the new wing – boys are focused and getting work done.” Boys are equally enthusiastic. “There are so many opportunities to do more, in a much bigger space,” says Geoffrey, Grade 8.

“The new wing makes the whole school feel and look better,” says Ethan, also in Grade 8. “I really like the deck and can’t wait to use it more when it’s warmer.” There is abundant activity in the new fitness centre. Along with phys-ed programs, boys in every grade are scaling the climbing wall in Climbing Club. Hockey teams are getting in their dry-land training using the fitness equipment. Outside, boys are really enjoying the new landscaping, outdoor classroom area and additional play spaces. n

Making a Major Gift Manageable. Yes you can! Many parents are doubling or tripling their annual gift amount and committing to do so for a few years in order to make a manageable, major pledge to the Building Leaders Campaign. Here is what it might look like:

$5,000 per year x 5 years = $25,000 pledge Years of your pledge: 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020 Each year, your donation can be fulfilled as you wish. Many donors find semiannual or monthly payments most convenient. For others, a gift of stock, which has tax advantages if you are holding appreciated securities, is the preferred method of donating to SHS. You can also vary the annual installment amount; the payments do not need to be equal over the life of the pledge. A cheque, credit card payment, e-transfer, gift of stock, or added to your SHS account; once a year, semi-annually, monthly over time . . . please let us know how we can assist you in structuring a meaningful and manageable pledge to the Building Leaders campaign. n
