Pastor’s Ar cle
Dennis Lewis
My kids have been counng down the days to the end of May. They’re excited for June to get here because they’re ready to be done with school. They’re ready to take a break and to have some fun, to spend me with family, to go to the beach, to go on vacaon, and so on. Stacey and I are also excited for the opportunity to take some me away from the day-to-day rhythm of busyness. And, more than that, we’re ready to make some special memories with our families. Rest is important, and it is necessary. In fact, it is Biblical. Very early on in Scripture, in Genesis, the very first book of the Bible, God models to us the importance of a me of rest. God created all things and then rested. Then, in the second book of the Bible, the book of Exodus, God commanded God’s people to honor a me of rest, and God called it the sabbath. The sabbath is menoned all through the Bible, in the Old Testament, and in the New Testament. Why does this seem to be so important to God? Because God knows we need it. We need to be able to rest, to spend some intenonal me allowing God, through the power of the Holy Spirit, to heal, strengthen, encourage, and speak to us. If we don’t place a high value on sabbath, on rest, we increase the likelihood of having an emoonal crisis and/or a spiritual crisis, also known as “burnout”. This can happen regardless of whether you are sll working, or are rered. My mother once told me that she felt like she was just as busy in rerement as she was when she was employed as a teacher and taking care of two “amazing” teenage boys. Our interests, even in rerement, no ma6er how good they are, sll demand our energy and our me. Rest, therefore, is incredibly important. Finally, I would encourage you to make sure that you engage in the spiritual disciplines of praying, reading Scripture, or meditang on the Lord during your me of rest. Si8ng on the beach, fishing, sleeping, reading novels, shopping, watching a movie, or whatever else you like to do when you rest, are all good things. But, none of them can take the place of our call to spend some intenonal me with the Lord, allowing God to pour into us. There is a tried and true, but hopefully not trite, statement that is important for us to remember. You can’t give others what you do not have. With this in mind, I would encourage you to make sure that you take a break from busyness, from life as usual, to allow God to work in you and prepare you for the opportunies God has prepared for you. Your me of rest, whether it be your me of sabbath during the week, or your vacaon throughout the year, isn’t just about you. Somewhere out there is a person that needs you, and they need the very best that you have to offer her or him. Have a wonderful Summer! God bless you all as you seek God’s face and spend me in God’s presence. In Christ, Dennis
