Fairtrade Bake Off What an amazing contribution you made to this event. Never did we imagine the range of baking we would have donated when we challenged the children to a bake off. Thank you to all of you who baked and bought cakes, biscuits and buns-including Fairtrade dog biscuits! The children of the Fairtrade action group were kept very busy at the sale and raised around £100. It was a tricky decision to make to find just a single winner in each age category and each child who baked has been given a Fairtrade KitKat today as a ‘thank you’ and ‘well done’. Foundation: Poppy Saddler (chocolate buns). Key Stage 1: Isabelle Barbour (Christmas Crispie Trees) Key Stage 2 Runners Up: Letti Dawson (unicorn cake), Molly Collins (multicoloured layered cake) and Zac Pedlow (Houses of Parliament) Key Stage 2 winner: Lucy Marshment (Winter cake with a Malteser tree) Staffing News Mr McHale has secured a promotion to a school in Sheffield and will be starting there in January. Whilst we will be sorry to see him leave us, this is an exciting opportunity for him to gain experience in a very different school context as he develops in his career. Miss Aspinall will be joining us in January and has already started visiting school to get to know children and school routines. Congratulations to Miss Painter who is expecting her first baby in April. Sports News Year 6 Basketball Well done to the Basketball team who played so well at the interschool tournament, winning matches against Netherton and West Bretton, drawing with Horbury Primary and Middlestown and losing by just 1 goal to overall winners St Peters. The placings were tight with us missing out on 2nd place by only 1 point. Our teams are playing exceptionally well this year and we are sure the winners’ trophy will be ours soon! Scholastic Book Fair Discounted books will be available at the Book Fair from Tuesday to Thursday next week. Drumming Workshop On Monday we are looking forward to a hands on drumming master class with Jeff Rich from the famous 1980’s rock band, Status Quo. He will be talking about the history of drumming as well as performing for us and involving all the children in playing percussion instruments. INSET day Due to a change in trainer availability for our planned staff training, we will now be closed for an INSET day on Monday 8th January-school will re open on Tuesday 9th January. We will be running childcare on this day and details will be confirmed next week. Please email the office if you are interested in this, with details of time requirements. Class News Foundation Stage Foundation Stage have been extremely busy this week, fixing, building and mending various items. We were sent a chest of real life tools to help us to fix Jeffery's plane and Ooblie Dooblie's spaceship. We could name lots of the tools and discussed how to use them safely. On Wednesday, we opened a car garage and invited customers in with broken down cars. The children filled up the petrol tanks, lifted up the bonnets and even gave some of the cars a M.O.T. There's nothing that we can't fix! Miss Painter, Mrs Lovell, Mrs Stearne, Mrs Thompson
Class 1 Rehearsals for our Christmas production of ‘Little Angel Gets Her Wings’ are well underway! The songs are being learnt, actions are being perfected and the lines are coming on a treat! We are so impressed with the number of children who have already learnt all of their lines and are trying very hard to perform with expression – thank you for supporting with this at home. Class 2 This week, the journalists at ‘The Truth’ newspaper have taken on a new challenge... film reviews. Unfortunately, ‘The Truth’ had to let go one of its veteran reporters (Old Man Humphrey), which has opened up a vacancy on the entertainment beat. In order to complete their task, Class 2 visited the cinema to see Lego Batman and carried out important research which informed their fantastic film reviews! During their time out of class, the children were a credit to the school! Finally, rehearsals for our Christmas nativity ‘One Bright Star’ are well underway and it would be great if you could help your children to learn their parts - which they have now all received. Class 3 After finding out that Hansel and Gretel are missing and writing witness reports, Class 3 are convinced that they will be found in the deep, dark forest, not far from their home village of Berrywood. We have been looking at the black and white eerie illustrations of Lorenzo Mattotti in Neil Gaiman’s version of the Brothers Grimm story and creating our own illustrations using black strokes of paint. We felt that his images were dramatic and powerful which reflects the themes running throughout the story. Mrs Findlay, Mrs Callaghan 2
