Sports Prediction League
30 Years since Winning Centenary Hurling Cup
Valley Rovers held their annual Prize giving for the Sports Prediction League on the premises of our new Chairman Johnny Crowley last Saturday night. A Picture of our winner is on page one of this weeks Newsletter receiving €100 from Valley Rovers Chairman Johnny Crowley.
Last Saturday night Valley Rovers remembered the team that captured the South East Centenary Hurling Cup on the 23rd December 1984. This was a major coup for Valleys at the time as they had not won a Junior South East title since 1968. Indeed in 1984 they were defeated in the first round of the South East (no back door then). On the way to the Centenary Hurling Cup title, Valleys defeated Intermediate side Tracton, South East Champions Kinsale, Carrigaline and Intermediate Hurling League Champions Ballinhassig in the Final after extra time.

As the Trophy which was never officially presented to the Valley Rovers team due to a skirmish that enfolded at the end of the game, Joe O’Sullivan accepted the wonderful trophy that was specially commissioned at the time on behalf of the team from the 1984 Honorary Secretary of Valley Rovers John Newman. Dinny O’Sullivan received the Man of the Match award for the game and Dinny recounted on the night that this was his only Adult Hurling Medal for the Rovers. Many believe that this win was the catalyst for our success in the ensuing years. The South East Board launched an enquiry into the scuffle at the end of the game but in true GAA fashion neither club named any players of mentors involved, and just accepted the fines. This was one of the more enjoyable social events that Valleys have held in a long time, with many stories recalled and we would like to thank everyone that attended especially those that travelled long distances. A big thank you to John Newman for providing team picture, match report and of course minding the trophy for the past 30 years. It was great to see the players still in great health and spirits and also that the two surviving mentors, current Vice Presidents Tony McCarthy and Gus O’Donovan were also in attendance. Thank you also to the organising committee and Paudie Palmer for doing his usual splendid job as MC. Pictures of this event will be on the website shortly Page 4 of 6

Valley Rovers would like to thank everyone that supported the Club Financially during the past year. To run a successful club requires a substantial amount of money and the support received throughout the year is very much appreciated by the club. We particularly would like to thank the Sellers and Buyers who supported our various fundraising initiatives m throughout the year such as Weekly Lotto, Sport Prediction League, Cork GAA Clubs Draw and those that sponsored and took part in the Golf Classic. Without your support and generosity the club could not have been as successful as it was in 2014.
