No Fuss Left-handed Stitches Continental tent Stitch This stitch is worked in rows horizontally or vertically. It is suitable for small areas of colour and gives a dense, hardwearing finish.

Basket weave tent stitch This stitch is so called because of the woven effect on the back. It is best for any large areas of colour, as it does not distort the canvas and gives a more even finish. Work up and down the diagonals, fitting each row into the previous row. This stitch is well worth persevering with if you are not familiar with it.

Long legged cross-stitch (edging stitch for pincushions specs cases and Xmas decorations) This overlapping stitch is worked across four vertical canvas threads and two horizontal, i.e. it is four threads wide and two high. It gives a pretty braided effect to finish off the stitched item. © Wendy Hope-Falkner 2002
