Saturday, Sept. 3, 2011 l 1:00 p.m. l San Antonio, Texas Alamodome (65,000/artificial) THE GAME: Northeastern State (1-0) makes its first of six road trips in 2011 this weekend when the RiverHawks face the University of Texas-San Antonio (0-0). Kickoff Saturday, Sept. 3, at the Alamodome (65,000) in San Antonio is slated for 1:00 p.m. CDT. This is the first meeting between the two schools. UTSA will launch its inaugural season under the direction of NSU alumnus Larry Coker. The Roadrunner football program truly was built from scratch. On Dec. 18, 2008, the University of Texas System Board of Regents approved UTSA’s Athletics Initiative Business Plan, which granted permission to add a football program. On March 6, 2009, Coker was introduced as the program’s first-ever head coach. The inaugural recruiting class was signed on Feb. 3, 2010, and a squad of approximately 28 scholarship players and 50 walk-ons underwent a practice season in 2010-11. THE RIVERHAWKS LAST WEEK: Northeastern State is 1-0 after blanking Bacone, 43-0, in the season opener at Doc Wadley Stadium. The Warriors had just one drive inside NSU territory all night. The shutout was the first for NSU since the 2001 campaign when then-head coach Tom Eckert led the Redmen to a 31-0 win over Bacone. Trey McVay (5-9, 185, Sr., Fort Gibson, OK) caught 10 passes, two for touchdowns, and Travis Boswell (6-1, 230, Sr., Tahlequah/Sequoyah HS) logged three quarterback sacks to pace the RiverHawks to the dominating victory. NSU rolled up 451 total yards (251 rushing/200 passing) while yielding just 70 total yards to the Warriors. BC had just 10 yards rushing on 29 carries. The RiverHawks played 71 of their 80 in uniform in their 2011 debut. Quarterbacks Kenny Davis (6-3, 180, Sr., Adair, OK) and Johnny Deaton (6-3, 220, So., Sand Springs, OK) were equally effective. Davis, the starter, threw for 84 yards and one TD on a 9-of-17 passing performance. He also rushed five times for 65 yards, including a 39-yard TD scamper. Deaton, an Oklahoma State transfer, was 9-of-14 passing for 78 yards and one touchdown. He had six carries for 27 yards and a TD. After a scoreless first quarter where NSU missed a field goal and had three possessions inside the Warrior 35, the RiverHawks erupted for 21 points before halftime. Deaton tossed a 4-yard TD pass to McVay on the first play of the second quarter. Joel Rockmore (5-7, 185, RsF., Lake Worth, Texas) had a 12-yard scoring jaunt with 9:13 to play and Deaton capped a 12-play, 68-yard drive with a 3-yard run with :10 to play in the frame. McVay caught his second touchdown of the night, a 22-yard strike from Davis, with 9:09 to go in the third. Davis had the longest run of the night and scored from 39 yards out on a quarterback sneak on fourth-and-one with 5:12 remaining. Northeastern State recorded a safety on a Bacone snap that went over the punter’s head and out of the end zone for a 37-0 margin after three periods. NSU’s final scoring play was a 38-yard reception when David Snell hauled in a Dallas McCutcheon rainbow with 5:43 to play in the game.

SCOUTING THE ROADRUNNERS (taken from UTSA game notes): UTSA is truly a startup program and features one of the youngest rosters in the nation this season. The roster lists just two seniors in OG/C Mike Sanchez and S Mark Waters, who transferred from Houston and New Mexico State, respectively, with only one season of eligibility remaining. The rest of the squad consists of of a dozen juniors, nine sophomores, 39 redshirt freshmen and 31 true freshmen. Additionally, only five scholarship players — S Lekenwic Haynes (Mississippi), OG/OT Patrick Hoog (Oklahoma State), RB Evans Okotcha (Portland State), Sanchez (Houston) and Waters (New Mexico State) — have seen previous action in an FBS or FCS football game. THE COACHES: Northeastern State is coached by Kenny Evans. The 1982 Northeastern State graduate is in his fourth season and has a 10-24 record. Evans, originally from Warner, Okla., and the 2005 Football Foundation Assistant Coach of the Year, was an NCAA Division I assistant coach for Louisiana Tech, North Texas, Florida and Oklahoma. He also has had assistant coaching stints at Southeastern Oklahoma State and Missouri Southern State universities. The RiverHawks’ assistant coaches are: Mike Knoll (assistant head coach/recruiting coordinator); Matt Hodgson (defensive coordinator); Brad Cornelsen (offensive coordinator); David Morgan (offensive line); Greg Richmond (defensive line); and John Murray (strength & conditioning/running backs). UTSA is coached by Larry Coker. Coker, originally from Okemah, Okla., earned two degrees from Northeastern State; a bachelor’s in 1970 and a master’s in 1973. He was a defensive back for the Redmen from 1966-69. Coker led the University of Miami to the 2001 BCS National Championship and during his six seasons logged a 60-15 (.800) record. He was the 2001 AFCA National Coach of the Year and the 2002 American Football Monthly National Coach of the Year. He also served as an assistant coach at Tulsa (1979-82), Oklahoma State (1983-89), Oklahoma (1990-92) and Ohio State (1993-95). The Roadrunner assistant coaches are: Travis Bush (offensive coordinator/ quarterbacks); Neal Neathery (defensive coordinator/linebackers); Tony Jeffery (special teams coordinator/receivers); Kevin Brown (tight ends); Polo Gutierrez (running backs); Jim Marshall (offensive line); Perry Eliano (safeties); Nathaniel Jones (cornerbacks); and Eric Roark (defensive line). SURROUND SOUND: Northeastern State will play its second game in as many years inside a dome arena. The Alamodome seats 65,000 and UTSA officials are attempting to establish the game attendance record for an inaugural game. As of Sunday, Aug. 28, UTSA had sold more than 40,000 tickets for this weekend’s game. South Florida’s attendance of 49,212 on Sept. 6, 1997 is the record for a school’s first-ever football game. Last year, NSU played at North Dakota’s Alerus Center where 9,719 were in attendance. The RiverHawks have a dome indoor practice facilty where the team will attempt to simulate this Saturday’s atmosphere. ON THE AIR: Northeastern State football is aired live on the Athletics web site (http:// GoRiverHawksGo.com) at no cost to listeners. Airtime Saturday is 12:30 p.m. The game also can be heard on KYAL 97.1 The Sports Animal in Tulsa and on KTLQ-AM 1350 and KEOK-FM 102.1 in Tahlequah. Bill Huddleston, the 2010 Lone Star Conference Broadcaster of the Year, and Nick Hampton have the call this season. UP NEXT: Northeastern State continues a three-game road swing next week. The RiverHawks will journey to Nebraska-Kearney on Sept. 10 for a 12:00 p.m. encounter against the Lopers. The lengthy road trip will end Sept. 17 at East Central (6:00 p.m.). The next home game for Northeastern State will be Sept. 24 when the RiverHawks host Oklahoma Panhandle State at 6:00 p.m. on Take a Kid to the Game Night where all children are admitted free when accompanied by a paying adult.
