A Note from the director And yet I wish for the thing I have. My bounty is as boundless as the sea, My love as deep. The more I give to thee, The more I have, for both are infinite. - Juliet A few months ago, I decided to direct Romeo and Juliet. Shakespeare is always challenging for actors, designers, directors, and audiences. Which is precisely why we should do it. But within that challenge we get to deal with a ton of really great stuff. Shakespeare’s language is exquisite, his characters are driven, and his imagery poetic. But it always comes back to telling a compelling story. Romeo and Juliet certainly has a compelling story, but that’s not what draws people to it. We know Romeo and Juliet. They are a part of us. They belong to us. They are the definition of lovers. They made their way into modern culture in songs, movies, poetry, novels, and television episodes. There must be a reason for that. It’s all about the love, isn’t it? It’s love that drives these two together with force. It’s intense love that brings together two people who must overcome huge obstacles in order to stay together, even if it means they would rather die then be kept apart. And Juliet calls it. She unknowingly, tragically, and terribly calls it when she says: It is too rash, too unadvised, too sudden. Too like the lightning, which doth cease to be Ere one can say, “It lightens.” But love doesn’t care. Love doesn’t care about time. Love doesn’t care whether it is rash or unadvised. Love doesn’t care about gender, place, station, or ethnicity, Love is.
