Olympic Legacy Rachel and Jennifer Thomson, year 11 GCSE PE students, worked tirelessly throughout the October half term holiday with the help of a small group of year ten students to produce a stunning Olympic legacy mural. US athlete visits Whickham School Jenny Simpson, World 1500m Champion, was in school delivering a sprint session to 60 students in year 7. Jenny represented the USA at the 2008 and 2012 Olympic Games and spent time with the students taking questions about her background, her life in America, her World title from Daegu and of course her experiences at the past two Olympic Games. The students had a fantastic afternoon of Athletics and from the 60 students involved, 14 were chosen to represent Whickham School at the Great School Sprint.
Great School Sprint
Fourteen talented year 7 sprinters were lucky enough to have a second athletics master class in the space of as many days, as the qualifiers from the above event travelled to The Sage to sprint against other year 7 athletes from across the region. Wallace Spearmon, who finished 4th in the 200m Final at London 2012 behind the 3 Jamaicans, and Dwayne Chambers were both on hand to give their expert coaching to the students before competing themselves at the City Games. Morgan Pearson and Lorezo Tanoh won the event, qualifying to themselves compete at the City Games. Both students even went on to win this event and qualify to compete in Manchester, representing the North.

Girls Active This years ‘Girls Active’ programme was a resounding success and once again the most successful in the area with 75 girls in years 7-9 attending each week. The programme was led by Miss Cox and the ‘Girls Active Leaders.’ The leaders this year were Mollie Pugmire, Olivia Leech, Beth Pringle and Jenna Dixon, who organised an action packed programme of sports from trampolining and dodgeball to netball and visits to Broomley Grange and Whickham Thorns. The programme continues to go from strength to strength and will no doubt be even bigger and better again this year!
Girls County Rugby The girls contact rugby at Whickham School continues to improve each year, with eight students selected to Represent Northumberland County.
Sportshall Athletics success
The year 9 and 10 sportshall athletics teams performed fantastically well yet again, with the girls claiming the Gateshead title for a fourth consecutive year. Meanwhile, the boys finished in second place, a single point behind the eventual winners. This is the equivalent to one second, meaning the competition could not have been more closely fought. The girls team now go onto the Tyne and Wear Final to represent Gateshead in the final week of term. Good luck!
