BARRHEAD NEWS TO AND FROM THE CONGREGATION In the Scriptures we are called to mourn with those who mourn. We do so in light of the terrible news of many lives being suddenly taken or seriously injured in the deadly terrorist attacks in Paris last week (not to mention the attacks in Beirut the day earlier). In the days which followed, the free world has been living in fear and on heightened alert for additional violent attacks. Death has suddenly became real and the human security structures many trusted in are suddenly seen to be as flimsy and feeble as they really are. Yet we know that our sovereign God remains in control. As his people we may trust that He has triumphed over death and evil and therefore nothing can separate us from his love. Let us then remember the grieving families who’ve lost life and pray that the church may reach out to the victims with the love of Christ and with the hope of the gospel. Let us also pray that justice and peace may prevail over such acts of injustice, and that those who plot wicked schemes may have their hearts changed. Together with all of this, let each of us be ready and longing for the day of Christ’s return when full justice and complete restoration will come to this broken and hurting world. As the weather temperatures get colder, let us not forget about our elderly and home-bound members for whom it is even more difficult and hazardous to venture out than otherwise. The winter months can therefore be especially lonely and quiet for them, and thus visits are welcome and appreciated. We also remember the expectant mothers in our congregation. We pray for healthy pregnancies for all mothers and children. In particular we think of sister Karina Tiggelaar who was placed on bedrest for the remaining weeks of her pregnancy. We wish
Karina and Logan much strength and patience at this time, and pray that they may receive the support they need as they await, in the Lord’s timing and under his blessing, the arrival of twins. May the arms of the congregation also reach out to you. It is most fitting to give recognition and a word of appreciation to Sr. Rikie Feringa for her 26 years of dedication and inconspicuous service in putting the liturgy upon on the board at the front of the (old) church. Due to the technological advancements, our sister may now enter “retirement” from this task. On behalf of the congregation we thank you for doing this work behind the scenes. As for what she’s been doing with all of her newfound spare time, you’ll have to ask her. May the Lord give to us all a blessed day of rest! CVL

NEERLANDIA NEWS FOR AND FROM THE FLOCK So far it has been a quiet week in the life of the members of the congregation. At time of writing, there have been no babies born. This has been a very regular thing to write about in the last months. Our congregation has been graciously blessed. This year we have seen 12 new babies born, adding to our membership . We can be thankful when we see God’s covenant promises fulfilled as he promised to be with us and our children. We have also seen a number of members leaving for greener pastures. Our Br. and Sr. Ed and Elaine Aikema built their new home in Barrhead and are moving. They have been in Neerlandia for many years and will be missed, even though they will not be far from here. We wish them the Lord’s blessing as they take up their lives in the Barrhead congregation and may they be a blessing there. th We say goodbye to Sr. Katrina Janssen who will be married on the 28 of this month. She will be making her new home in Telkwa BC. We wish her the Lord’s blessing as she takes up her task there in the URC and may she be a blessing in the congregation. We congratulate Martha VanAssen with her birthday this week. May the Lord bless you in the coming year. On Wednesday we could see and hear about the Lord’s work being done in Ecuador and other countries. We hope you had the opportunity to see this presentation from Word and Deed about their work. We are sometimes so busy with our own lives that we tend to forget the work being done to spread the gospel to the very poor. May the Lord continue to bless this work and may we be a help where possible in word and deed. Let us not forget that after the second service we have election for another office bearer. There is a correction to be made with regards the upcoming congregational meeting that was put in last week’s bulletin. We will meet in the school and not in the church as was announced. Oops, the week was not over when writing this news. We want to congratulate Br. and Sr. Ivan and Sarah VanAssen who received a baby girl on Thursday by C-section. They named her Renae Danielle. There was some concern regarding the baby’s health before she was born, but the Lord answered all the prayers, and she is a very small but healthy little girl. Ivan and Sarah, may you receive everything you need to bring up this child in the fear of His great and awesome name. May we have a blessed Sunday as we welcome Br. Gerard Veurink on our pulpit this day. May we all examine our lives in the light of God’s Word. AV
