Coadjutor search committee releases diocesan profile
T In the wake of violence, prayers for peace Members of St. John’s Church, La Verne, led by Kelli Grace Kurtz, vicar (pictured above at center right), gathered on Nov. 15 to pray in the aftermath of a spate of violent terrorist attacks in the preceding days, weeks and months. The candlelit service was held in the memory of attack victims in Paris, France, and Beirut, Lebanon, as well as students killed in a massacre in April at Garissa University, Kenya; and those enduring continued conflict in Israel and Palestine, Syria, Egypt and Iraq. The service at St. John’s reflected reactions to the two recent attacks expressed by Episcopalians and Anglicans throughout the world. Bishop J. Jon Bruno sent a message of support to Bishop Pierre Whalon of the Convocation of Episcopal Churches in Europe, headquartered in Paris. Presiding Bishop Michael Curry urged “all Episcopalians and people of good will and faith to pray for those who have died, those who are in harm’s way, those who seek to help in any way; and to pray for us as a human family.” The church’s Executive Council, in Maryland at its regularly scheduled meeting, said Nov. 16 that Episcopalians should respond to recent attacks with both prayer and discernment, and expressed its “sorrow and grief for those who died, those injured, and those for whom peace has been shattered by the recent acts of terrorism in Paris and Beirut.” As the situation was being played out in the French capital, Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby Tweeted, “We weep with those affected [and] pray for deliverance and justice.” Read more reactions at Episcopal News Service, bit.ly/20YlEnR.
Mt. Calvary monks seek reconnection with associates
W
hen a fire in November 2008 destroyed Mt. Calvary Monastery and Retreat House in Santa Barbara, records listing several hundred associate members of the sponsoring Order of the Holy Cross were also lost. The order is now attempting to reconnect with associates. "This is an official shoutout to all associates," the brothers wrote in a message to the diocesan community. "Please reach the retreat house in Santa Barbara to let them know where you are and how you can
be reached for all Associate activities. The community needs you to step forward and reestablish yourself. You are loved and you are needed." Holy Cross associates and those who are interested in joining them may find information at mount-calvary.org, or at a Facebook page established by Associate Tom Bickley, which includes photos and information. he Bishop Coadjutor Search Committee has published its profile of the Diocese of Los Angeles, and called for nominations for the election of the seventh bishop of the diocese. In the report, the committee outlines characteristics they seek for the next bishop of Los Angeles, as informed by information gathered at listening sessions and an online survey. A bishop coadjutor, who will become the bishop diocesan upon the November 2018 retirement of Bishop J. Jon Bruno, will be elected at Diocese of Los Angeles’ convention Dec. 2 - 3, 2016. The Search Committee invites parishioners in the diocese to submit nominations for these positions through January 15, 2016 (when all applications must be completed). Candidates may nominate themselves or be nominated by any adult (16 years or older) communicant of the Episcopal Church in good standing. By canon law, a candidate must be an ordained priest, at least 30 years of age, to be consecrated a bishop. The committee encourages those submitting nominations to first read the profile in full. To download the profile and a nomination form, visit the Search Committee web page at www.ladiocese.org/coadjutorsearch.html. The form may be completed online or be downloaded in PDF format and the printed copy mailed to: Bishop Coadjutor Search Committee, Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles, 840 Echo Park Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90026. On beginning a new ministry By Mary D. Glasspool
I
t has been an honor and a privilege to have served you all in the Diocese of Los Angeles these past five-and-one-half years. This past August I received a call to become assistant bishop of New York, and I have accepted that call. God willing, I will begin this new ministry on the East Coast April 1, 2016. The next several months will, of course, be busy! Bishop Jon Bruno is designating some time during our upcoming Diocesan Convention to celebrate our time together. And while the outline of my planned sabbatical has been adjusted, I will still be taking it from January 18 to March 18, 2016. During this time I will be spending two weeks in the Diocese of Cuernavaca (February 13 - 27) on the fourth annual Pilgrimage and Intensive Spanish Language Course; two weeks in Texas at a meeting of the bishops suffragan adjacent to the spring House of Bishops’ meeting (March 6 - 18); and at least one week (dates to be determined) on retreat. To write that I am deeply grateful for this time of service in the Diocese of Los Angeles is an understatement. From the summer of 2009 when I entered the search process for two bishops suffragan in Los Angeles, to and through today, this time has been filled with challenge, growth, sorrow, joy, outrageous diversity, monumental change, hard work, and joyful play. During my time here I’ve had the extraordinary opportunities of working with so many committed people in the areas of Ecumenical and Interreligious Life, the excellent schools of the diocese, the lesbian/ gay/bisexual/transgendered community, the youth and young adults, and the people of the northern part of the diocese. I will always hold dear so many unique experiences: the consecration with Bishop Diane on May 15, 2010; diocesan conventions, clergy conferFEATURED ITEM:

ences, and ordination services which featured so many incredible people; the steady beat of weekly visitations to parishes and missions striving to further God’s reign of love and justice in this world; Episcopal Nights at Dodger Stadium; the growing relationship with the Diocese of Cuernavaca; and travel to such places as Quito, Ecuador, Taiwan, Pine Ridge Reservation, Israel/Palestine, and (one of my favorite, go-to places) Glendale! My partner of almost 30 years, Becki Sander, and I finally got married there due to the remarkable long-term work of so many of you in the struggle for marriage equality. And I am more than a little grateful that there is still some time in the next few months to continue to appreciate all that has happened. The Episcopal Diocese of New York (for those who may want to know a little more), is geographically comprised of three city boroughs and seven upstate counties: Staten Island (where I was born!), Manhattan, and the Bronx; Westchester, Putnam, Dutchess, Ulster, Sullivan, Orange, and Rockland Counties. There are close to 200 parishes and missions; 60,000 baptized communicants in good standing; and more than a few churchrelated institutions that creatively engage with people where they live. There will be more to come in the days ahead. For now, let me simply bear witness to that which holds us all together through thick and thin — the love of God. For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. —Romans 8:38-39 ?
