Go and vote. Vote your conscience ... informed by what it means to love your neighbor. To participate in the process of seeking the common good. To participate in the process of making this a better world. However you vote, go and vote. And do that as a follower of Jesus. — Presiding Bishop Michael B. Curry

We give thanks for the right to vote. Help us to hold this privilege and responsibility with the care and awareness it merits, realizing that our vote matters and that it is an act of faith.

Guide us through this election as a nation, state, and community as we vote for people to do work on our behalf and on the behalf of our communities. Help us to vote for people and ballot initiatives that will better our community and our world so it may reflect the values Christ taught us. Help us create communities that will build your kingdom here on earth — communities that will protect the poor, stand up for the vulnerable, advocate for those who are not seen and heard, and listen to everyone’s voice. We pray for this nation that is deeply divided. May we come together for the common good and do as you have called us to do — to act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with you through creation. Help us act out of love, mercy and justice rather than out of arrogance or fear. Lord, continue to guide us as we work for the welfare of this world. We pray for places that are torn by violence, that they may know peace. We pray for communities who are struggling with inequality, unrest, and fear. May we all work toward reconciliation with one another and with God. Help us to listen in love, work together in peace, and collaborate with one another as we seek the betterment of our community and world. ?

lmighty God, you have knit together your elect in one communion and fellowship in the mystical body of your Son Christ our Lord: Give us grace so to follow your blessed saints in all virtuous and godly living, that we may come to those ineffable joys that you have prepared for those who truly love you; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen.
T
oday many of our churches are celebrating All Saints Day, transferred from earlier this week. This feast day was and still is one of my favorite days in the church calendar. When I was a child I was fascinated with the lives of the saints. So much so that I eventually read my way through every book on the lives of different saints in my Catholic school library. The nuns used to write notes to my mother: “Mrs. Jardine, please tell Diane that she should read something other than biographies of the saints.” My mother’s typical reply went something like this: “There is nothing wrong with reading about the lives of saints. Diane will read something else when she is
ready.” That kept the nuns at bay for a while. I was fascinated by the lives of the saints because they were ordinary people who made mistakes. They were people just like you and me, yet at some point in their lives they realized that God was calling them to live out their faith in a new way. They turned their lives over to God and while this didn’t insulate them from hurt or struggle, their faith gave them the strength to meet whatever came their way. As we celebrate All Saints — not only the “famous” ones, but all the saints in our lives — may we pray that we can attain the level of faith they had — one that gave them so much strength for their journey. ?
