The Oakville Football Program realizes that Football is the ultimate team sport. Through commitment, discipline, pride, and teamwork the players and coaches will pursue a championship level of football, while sacrificing personal interests of glory. It is the mission of our program to build character in our student-athletes. We will always prepare, practice, and play

to WIN on the field, in the classroom and in the game of life. Whether their next phase in life is with or without football, our players will leave the program adequately trained to perform efficiently and effectively. As coaches, we will be supportive and active in promoting academic and athletic achievement. We will exhibit a quality foundation of leadership and mentor our players to relentlessly pursue the “character of a champion”.

These traits are what we expect players and coaches to exhibit:

C ommitment - Do everything necessary to achieve a goal. No excuses. H eart - Never allow yourself to quit, never! A ttitude - How you think, act, or feel towards yourself, another person or thing.

M ovitivation - Self motivation - desire and incentive comes from within.

P reparation - Planning, conditioning, evaluation, and academics.

I ntegrity - Treat everyone with respect and how to want to be treated.

O n-Going – Strive for excellence.

N ever a Doubt - Never a doubt that you will succeed.

Drugs and alcohol   

Drugs and alcohol pose a serious health risk. For athletes in training, the risks can be severe. Athletes violating policies pertaining to drugs and alcohol are subject to suspension from school and sports for 365 days. (See the Athletic/Activity Code of Conduct) NO DRUGS, ALCOHOL, TOBACCO, OR STEROIDS.

Conduct        

Inappropriate or obscene language reflects adversely upon the team and school. Such language can cause the team to be penalized during games. Show respect to other players as well as coaches. Taunting will not be tolerated during games or practice. Hazing will definitely not be tolerated. (See the Mehlville School District Discipline Handbook) Equipment and uniforms should only be worn during games and practice. Only you should wear your game jersey, not your girlfriend. A full set of equipment will be issued to you – DO NOT borrow another players equipment. Any lost or missing items will be put on the fine list in the main office. No horseplay in the locker room.

**violation of conduct rules will result in extra conditioning if not disciplinary action by the school**

 

Attendance School Attendance    

Every player is expected to attend class daily. Exceptions to this should be due to only illness or personal reasons approved by a parent or physician. If you attend school, you should always attend practice. If you can make it through the entire school day, you can make it through practice. Note that you must be in school to participate in practice or games (ISS is considered being absent). If you need to go home due to illness or any emergency, you must personally tell a coach or leave a message with the office (467-7202). Always tell a coach at in advance about a doctor’s appointment or other emergency.

***See

Practice, Work-outs and Game Attendance       

 

the In-Season Commitment point sheet***

All players are expected to participate in all practices and work out sessions unless excused by the coach for reasons deemed valid by the coach. Your family is more important than football, but schedule any family function around your busy practice schedule. During the summer if you cannot make it to practice for whatever reason, you must call a coach, the main or athletic office and leave a message. If you miss your bus, try to make it to practice any way that you can. If you are able to make it to school, you will only be assessed for being late, not absent. If you are late to practice, you will receive extra conditioning. If you miss a practice, you will be required to do extra conditioning to make up for the conditioning that you missed. The purpose for this is not for us to spend time running players, but to emphasize the importance of being at practice. BE THERE! DON’T MISS!

Playing Time 

Playing time is not a guarantee. Each coach will determine who deserves to play. High effort and a positive attitude are just as important as playing ability. Missing practice, low grades, or poor conduct will result in loss of playing time. There will be an ATTEMPT to play everyone at the freshman and junior varsity level but this is not guaranteed. ▪ ▪ ▪

If at any time you have a question about your playing time, the student athlete must talk to the coach. A parent should not approach a coach until the player has done so first. If the problem is not resolved at this point then a parent/coach meeting can be scheduled.

Practices  If you’re right on time you’re late  No Absences except for sickness, a death, or family crisis  You must notify a coach on this staff (not your friends on

the team) if you need to be absent

 If you are injured and can not practice, you will be

expected to meet the trainer for rehab and you are expected to be with your position coach to listen and learn your position and about your opponents (not goofing off on the sidelines)

This is a very important topic and we want you to understand our coaching philosophy.

As a staff, safety or your child is our number one priority and concern. We also need you to understand that football is a full contact sport.

We will never teach your child to use their helmet as a weapon.

We will never teach your child to lead their body with their helmet.

We will read and follow the NOCSAE Standard: WARNING No Helmet can prevent all head or any neck injuries a player might receive while participating in football. Do not use this helmet to butt, ram or spear an opposing player. This is in violation of the football rules and such use can result in severe head or neck injuries, paralysis or death to you and possible injury to your opponent

Players need to talk to their coach at their level

Coach will send the player to the trainer for evaluation

The trainer will contact family& coaches for next step

Parent/Coach Relationship 

Both parenting and coaching are very difficult vocations.

By establishing an understanding of each position, we are better able to accept the actions of the other and provide greater benefit to children.

As parents, when your children become involved in our program you have a right to understand what expectations are placed on your child.

This begins with clear communication from the coaching of your child’s program.

Communication You Should Expect From Your Child’s Coach: 

Goal of the Program

Expectations the coach has for your child as well as all the players on the team

Locations and times of all practices and contests

Team requirements, I.E. special equipment, off-season conditioning

Procedure should your child be injured during participation

Discipline that results in the denial of your child’s participation

Communications Coaches Expect From Parents: 

Concerns expressed directly to the coach

Notification of any schedule conflicts well in advance

Specific concern(s) in regard to a coach's philosophy/expectations

***As your child becomes involved in the program at OHS, they will experience some of the most rewarding moments of their lives. It is important to understand that there also may be times when things do not go the way you or your child wishes. At these times discussion with the coach is encouraged.

Appropriate Concerns to Discuss with Coaches: 

The treatment of your child mentally and physically

Ways to help your child improve

Concerns about your child’s behavior

***It is difficult to accept your child’s not playing as much as you may hope. Coaches are professionals. They make judgment decisions based on what they believe is in the best interest of the team as a whole. As you have seen from the proceeding list, certain things can be and should be discussed with your child’s coach. 

Other things, such as those in the following section must be left to the discretion of the coach.

Issues not appropriate to discuss with a coach: 

Playing time

Team strategy

Play calling

Other student athletes

Proper procedure in contacting a coach about a concern: Chain of command Coaches work to maximize opportunities for students who participate in sports while maintaining a competitive program. At times, the decision of a coach may come into question by an athlete or parent. These are the steps that should be followed if this situation arises: I.

Athlete should initiate a conversation with the athletes position coach

II.

If a resolution or answer does not suffice the athlete should then initiate a meeting with the head football coach of that team.

III.

If a resolution does not suffice this is where the parent of the athlete would need to get involved. At this time the parent and athlete’s team head coach would initiate a meeting

IV.

If a resolution does not suffice the parent and athlete will initiate a meeting with the head coach of that athlete’s team and the Varsity Head Coach.

Proper procedure in contacting a coach about a Concern con’t: 24 hour rule  This rule applies to parent-coach interactions. If

something is bothering you about your child’s status on a team, give yourself 24 hours before you contact the coach, never attempt to contact the coach after a contest, especially a loss. The time away from the situation will give you a chance to search for a perspective that may give you a new way to look at the circumstances. Discussion with the coach will be more meaningful when calmer situations prevail.

As parents, it is important for you to be active in your child’s athletic experience and help to foster a positive relationship between your student athlete and their coaches, teammates, fans, officials, and opponents. Parents should be supportive of the coaching staff and team goals in order to help create better members of the community.

Final Thoughts 

Research indicates that students involved in extracurricular activities have a greater chance for success during adulthood. Many of the character traits required to be a successful participant are exactly those that will promote a successful life after high school. We hope the information provided in this presentation makes you and your child’s experience with the OHS football program less stressful and more enjoyable.
