Counselor’s Corner Greeting! October is National Bullying Prevention Month and October 23-27th is Red Ribbon Week- a week where we celebrate and educate on the importance of living a drug free and healthy life style! This month I’ll be teaching students what “bullying” means along with how to handle a bully! We’ll also focus on being kind and how to be a good friend! The last week in October, during Red Ribbon Week, we will have two different speakers present to students. Detective Chris from the Spirit Lake Tribe GRIPS Task Force will be here to update our students on the Spirit Lake Gang Code and a group called Know the Truth will be here to educate our students about the dangers of drug and alcohol use along with sharing their personal rehabilitation and treatment stories.
My name is Jaci Homan. I’m originally from Mitchell, South Dakota, but I currently reside in Devils Lake. In search of a career change, I was offered an opportunity to work with elementary students as a paraprofessional at Minnewaukan Public School. It was such a rewarding experience that I was inspired to continue my education and pursue teaching. I started at Lake Region State College where I completed my generals. I transferred to Mayville State University where I was admitted into the education program and pursued a Bachelors of Science degree in Elementary Education. I’m very passionate about providing educational experiences that will allow my students to have fun along the way. As a first-year teacher, I hope to provide my students with a wide range of learning possibilities that will help them gain an enjoyment for learning and build on their future success. I also hope to build positive relationships with each of my students, as well as their families.
Exciting Happenings… The sixth grade class attended Eco-Ed Day at Sully’s Hill on September 12. The class listened and participated in different presentations. The presentations varied from Remarkable Reptiles, Insects, Soil Health, Native and Prairie Plants, wetlands, and North Dakota wildlife. They classified soil types, demonstrated the purpose of wetlands, touched animal skins, and they could have touched a snake. The class even had a special lesson on monarch life cycles and how Sully’s Hill tracks their migration patterns all the way to Mexico.
