Octobre 2016 Newsletter Dear Families, We have had a wonderful start to the year, getting to know each other and beginning this adventure of learning a new language together. I cannot express how excited I am with the progress your children have made in just a few short weeks. They are all so keen and picking up French so quickly. It was great meeting all of you at Meet at the Teacher, thank you for coming! As the autumn weather approaches, it can become wet and muddy out on the playground. I would ask that your child have a pair of indoor shoes that can be kept at school as we do not want mud or wet grass on our carpet. Any toys (pokemon cards, stuffed animals) students bring to school need to remain in their backpacks during class time. Students are allowed to play with them only during recess. Our home reading program has begun and I thank you for your support. The introduction of French sounds will give us a good basis for all the reading and writing that is to come! Your child has learned how to pronounce all the sounds in French in class and they are reviewed every day in our calendar routine. I know it is tempting to translate the work that comes home but please avoid the temptation! The children are learning through pictures, stories, songs and actions, (and lots and lots of repetition), the same way they learned to speak their mother tongue! This Friday I will start sending home your child’s red song and poem folder. In the folder are different songs we have learned together in class that they may want to sing for you at home. Please return this folder no later than Thursday along with the yellow reading folder. For the next round of Show and Tell beginning on Oct.11th, I am asking the Star of the Day to bring in a picture of someone in their family (mother, father, grandparent, brother, sister, aunt, uncle, cousin, pets, friend). We will try to guess who it is. This is to help us learn some basic vocabulary associated with our families. Curriculum Expectations this month: Math: Finishing up sorting and patterning. Starting Numeration and Number Sense Language: Finishing up Jolly phonics, introduction of new vocabulary, beginning to make simple sentences Social Studies: Rules Rights and Responsibilities continued Science: Seasonal/Daily changes Merci, Mme Jenkins
