Offset triangle and strip set when sewing them together. They will need to be off set 1/4” so that the edge of the borders will meet and be straight.

Adding Borders Measure through the center of the quilt top from left to right in several places. Average these measurements and round to the nearest 1/8”. This becomes measurement W. Divide W by 2 to get half the width (W/2).

Measure through the center of the quilt top from top to bottom in several places. Average these measurements and round to the nearest 1/8”. This becomes measurement L. Divide L by 2 to get half the length (L/2).

Add first border to the top. Fold the quilt center in half side to side. Mark the center point (fold line) in the top of the quilt center with a pin. Match the border triangle point to the pin. In this photo, the pin is in the quilt top. The border is on the top. The border and quilt top have right sides together.

Place the beginning of your measuring tape on the center point as seen in the previous photo. Then measure to the right of that point along the border the distance of the W/2 measurement (that is the width of the quilt top divided in half). Mark with a pin. Repeat from the center point to the left measuring the distance of W/2. Mark with a pin.

In this photo the thin purple strip at the top is the quilt top. The pink, green and purple strip at the bottom is the border. The pin is in the border. The edge of the quilt top should come to the pin. Pin the two layers securely together in the center and at the end. Then pin securely between the center and the end, easing in any fullness as necessary. Repeat on the left side of the center. This photo is the same as the preceding photo except that it is taken from the quilt side rather than the border side. It shows the quilt center pinned to the border. Stitch the border to the quilt center. Begin 1/4” from the edge of the quilt top and stitch to 1/4” of the end of the quilt top. Repeat these steps for the bottom border and for each side. For the sides use the L/2 (length of quilt center) measurement instead of W/2.

Mitering Borders Place your quilt top on a flat surface, wrong side up as in the photo to the right. Place your rotary ruler across the borders so that the edge of the ruler passes through point A where the seams meet that attach the borders. Also the 45° line on your ruler is on the bottom edge of the border B. Draw a line from point A across the border. This will be your stitching line.
