The Basics The Oklahoma State cross country program returns to action Saturday, as the men’s and women’s teams travel to Fayetteville, Ark., for the Chile Pepper Festival. The annual event, in its 22nd year, features many of the top collegiate teams from around the country, with this year’s edition hosting about 4,000 athletes. The collegiate portion of the day will begin at 9:45 a.m. with the men’s 10,000-meter race, while the women’s 5,000-meter race is scheduled to follow at 10:30 a.m. All races will be held at the University of Arkansas Cross Country Course. OSU Lineups Nearly all of Oklahoma State’s men and women are registered to run Saturday, including several key men’s athletes from last year’s national championship team. (full listing on next page) Last Time Out The Oklahoma State cross country program turned in one its most dominant performances in the 74-year history of the Cowboy Jamboree Saturday, claiming the first-place individual and first-place team finish in both the men’s and women’s university divisions. Cowgirl senior Mihaela Susa was the top women’s finisher in the event, running the 6,000-meter race with a time of 21:10.53. She was one of five Cowgirls to finish in the top 10. On the men’s side, OSU junior Girma Mecheso anchored the Cowboys’ meet

championship, winning the individual title by more than 20 seconds. He was one of five Cowboys in the top 10. 2009 in Review The 2009 season was perhaps the best season in the history of Oklahoma State cross country for the men’s team. The Cowboys captured their second Big 12 Championship in two years, and added their second NCAA Championship, their first since 1954. Senior Ryan Vail won the individual Big 12 championship and was joined in the top four by three of his teammates. OSU went on to win its fifth NCAA Regional Championship before winning the NCAA Championships. The Cowgirls were led all season by star runner Mihaela Susa who narrowly missed out on notching her third straight All-Big 12 honor. Susa showed up strong at regionals to win her third straight AllRegion honor and an at-large bid to the NCAA Championships. OSU in the Polls The USTFCCCA rankings have listed the Oklahoma State men’s cross country team at the No. 2 spot in each 2010 poll. This week the Cowboys sit only eight points behind top-ranked Stanford. The men have also been the No. 1-ranked Midwest region squad in each poll this year. The Cowgirls began the year unranked, but have climbed to No. 28 in the latest poll after impressive performances in their first two meets. They are No. 3 in the Midwest Region.

Chile Pepper Festival Pokes’ Quotes: OSU Previews The Chile Pepper Coach Dave Smith “This will weigh into who our top runners will be heading into nationals, but so will the Jamboree and so will everyday things we see in workouts. I have a pretty good feel in my mind and I think I know who our top nine on both sides are. I think it would take something fairly significant on both sides are. It would take something fairly significant to shake that up at this point.” “We prep for the 10k all year. That’s kind of the way we deal with things. It’s not much different for us, other than that it’s at a time of the year when we’re hitting a lot of intensity. We’re in about a 15- to 21-day period where we’re really doing a lot of training - a lot more than the rest of the year. Once we get through this weekend then we go through about three or for more days of that then things really calm down. From then on it’s just racing and resting.” “We’re still trying to figure out a couple things. One of those is with our fourth and fifth men. How long can they go with the first three? We’re going to do things a little differently this weekend in that German, Colby and Girma, hopefully, are going to run together and we’re going to run really controlled through four miles. Then each half mile after that we’re going to pick up the intensity and see how long our fourth and fifth guys can hang in there and run comfortably. That will give us some idea of we’re going to plan our attack at the national meet.” Colby Lowe

“It’s going to be a good race. There’s going to be quite a few good teams there that we’re going to encounter. It’s a good test to really see where we all are. Another thing is that it is a 10k, so it’s a good thing to simulate what we’re going to come to at regionals and nationals. It will be a good chance for some of these guys that haven’t run one before to really get a good effect of what it’s going to feel like. Also, being in a big race with some good teams will get everybody used to running in that situation where you have to be focused and you have to know what our plan is and what we’re doing. We’ll really focus on running our race and doing what we do best; just going out there and competing hard.” German Fernandez “We’re just going out there to compete hard. We’re not necessarily going for the win, we’re just going to get better as a team. It’s going to be really competitive with Arkansas and Indiana and the other teams there. We’re just going to run our own race. When we start worrying about them, that’s when it gets in our head and we get nervous. We’ve just got to treat it like another race. We’re just going out there and having fun.” Felicity Milton “I really want to get out there and just run it. I didn’t have such a good shoot at the Jamboree and I thought I was fit. I thought I was ready to race; turned out it was a really bad day. I’ve had good training sessions. I had them before the Jamboree and I’ve had them after the Jamboree. I’d like to get some confidence. I’d like to run well, but ultimately, we’re training too and we want to hit the Big 12s, regionals and nationals stronger each time. We’ll run tired on Saturday, but hopefully it will really pay off in the long run and we’ll get a chance to rest up before the rest of the year.”
