Last Time Out The OSU cross country program qualified both the men’s and women’s squads for the national meet after each team finished second at the NCAA Midwest Regionals. It marked the first time since 2005 that
both squads have qualified for the meet in the same year. Colby Lowe claimed the individual championship for the men, while Mihaela Susa anchored the women’s squad with an eighth-place finish. 2009 in Review The 2009 season was perhaps the best season in the history of Oklahoma State cross country for the men’s team. The Cowboys captured their second Big 12 Championship in two years, and added their second NCAA Championship, their first since 1954. Senior Ryan Vail won the individual Big 12 championship and was joined in the top four by three of his teammates. OSU went on to win its fifth NCAA Regional Championship before winning the NCAA Championships. The Cowgirls were led all season by star runner Mihaela Susa who narrowly missed out on notching her third straight All-Big 12 honor. Susa showed up strong at regionals to win her third straight AllRegion honor and an at-large bid to the NCAA Championships. OSU in the Polls The Oklahoma State men have been ranked in the top two in the USTFCCCA rankings for the entire 2010 season. The Cowboys enter the national meet ranked second and holding more first-place votes than any other team. The Cowgirls started the year unranked, but have consistently risen in the polls with good performances. They enter the NCAA Championships at 19th, their highest ranking of the year.

Pokes’ Quotes Coach Dave Smith On how he feels about the race “I am cautiously optimistic. It is just a real battle right now. I think Stanford is probably the best team on paper and Wisconsin has closed the gap over the last few weeks, and I think they are about equal to us. There is a three team battle on the men’s side right now. Last year we had a lot of wiggle room. German Fernandez finished 97th, and we still won. We don’t have that this year. Everything has to go right this year. Last year we were way out in front, after Stanford blew up. This year things have to go well for us.” On where the team is heading into nationals “This is about where I hoped we’d be. I probably was hoping for a little more stability in our fifth man, knowing who he was, how he was running, and being consistent all year long. We haven’t had that. We’ve had Jonathan Stublaski run well as our fifth man, we’ve had Joseph Manilafasha run well as our fifth man, but we haven’t had a lot of consistency. I am a little nervous about that. Stanford has the same weakness, but Wisconsin has the best fifth man in the country right now. They just don’t quite have the upfront power that Stanford does.” On how OSU will approach the race “We are going to go out there and run our race plan. We are well prepared, we are fit, we are ready to go, and as long as we run as intelligently and as hard as we can, we can’t control how anyone else does. We have to run our perfect race, the chips may fall and we may win or we may not, but we will walk out of there knowing we did everything we could to win.” On what it takes to win “We have referenced the fact that last year in the middle of the race it looked to us like we had blown our chance to win a national championship, and as it turned out we ended up sneaking one out over Oregon. In that race you never know. From 30th place to 100th place, it is two guys per second, so every second counts. Last year we won by 16 points, this year it could be one, two, three points. Which means one guy ran two seconds faster, or four guys ran a half a second faster and that is the difference. It is going to take a perfect race by our entire squad to make it happen.” On the fifth man “We’ve got seven guys that could be a great fifth man, but we only get to run three of them. Picking from the seven is very tough on us as coaches because we have to try and figure out who is hot right now by their body language, by the way they warm up the days leading up to the race. It is hard to guess. Last year we had the same situation where I didn’t know to run David Chirchir or Daniel Watts and I picked Chirchir so he ended up being our sixth guy. It is really hard to look those guys that want to run in the eye and say you aren’t going out there today. That part isn’t fun, but it is nice to have so many to choose from. It is a blessing and a curse I think.” On what he tells the athletes leading up to the race “What I tell all of our guys is that we are taking 12 guys up there and you have to approach this race like you are racing on Monday and you will be the fifth man. They probably won’t know until Monday when we step out on that course who is running and who isn’t. So they have to approach it like they are going to race. Even the guy that is 12th guy can’t assume anything; they have to go out like they are going to be running that day.” On his goals are for the women’s team “The women are currently ranked 19th. Like I was telling them, in the years leading up to the championship, the men always out-perform their best ranking of that year. I told the women I want to do the same thing. Our highest ranking is 19th, so let’s do better than that. We are going to run our race plan and run our race as intelligently as we can and run as hard as we can and hopefully that will put us in a place higher than 19th. There are a bunch of women that work really hard. They are a lot more focused than I thought they’d be. It is important to them and they work extremely hard. Distance running is a blue-collar sport, the harder you work; you are going to get divi-
dends. I have seen them grow up and mature over the last six months, and especially over the last three months of season they have been a focused group. When I said let’s get better than 19th I think they took it as an insult because they have higher goals than that.” On Mihaela Susa “She has been amazing for this program. She still has track left, but this will be her last cross country race. She has been a great ambassador for the team. When we bring recruits in, she is great with them. She leads by example; no one works harder than Mihaela. She will work herself to death if you let her. Her hard work paid off for her last year. She made it to cross country nationals, indoor nationals and outdoor nationals. She was the only athlete at OSU to do that. No guy did it. A lot of the women on the team that watched her discipline and her drive have learned from her.” On how he feels about the women’s performance this year “I am super proud of the women. We talked about how we were going to qualify for nationals because you want them to think positively at the beginning of the season, but in the back of my mind I thought that was a 30/70 proposition, that it was going to take a few more years to get there. They’ve matured a ton, they’ve worked really hard, and now we are there. I am just really proud of what they have done.” On the possibility of bad weather “Bad weather separates the tough from the un-tough. I think we are a pretty tough team. We don’t have an indoor track; we do all of our training outside. It gives people that are tough an advantage. I would love for it to be 32 degrees with sideways rain; I think that would be great. But it doesn’t look like we are going to get that.” On the team “There isn’t a better fourth man in the country than Tom Farrell. If we were racing a four man meet, I would be extremely confident that we would win this meet, but it is a five man meet. Having that comfort and level of confidence in the top four, guys like Colby and German and Girma, they understand it. German has run in world championships. Colby and Girma are All-Americans. Those guys know what to do, and they are almost like coaches themselves. Those three, they have a race plan. Tom is going to have a different race plan than he has had in the past. The back three are just going to try and run as good fifth men.” On the NCAA Championships “I think that the cross country national championship is one of the greatest sporting events there is. I love March Madness because of the drama and tension, but there is almost more tension at this meet because you have the 31 best teams in the country all laying it on the line. It will all be decided in 30 minutes. It is everybody against everybody, winner take all, no mistakes. Every mistake you make is amplified because you have 250 runners in there. So that is a lot of pressure, a lot of intensity, and for guys that aren’t used to it, that can be very intense. It can be overwhelming, and a lot of guys crumble. I have seen good teams crumble under that pressure. We have three guys running for us that have never run in this race. So we are just hoping that they will go and handle it under pressure.”

Pokes’ Quotes Men’s Athlete German Fernandez On the NCAA Midwest Regionals “At regionals we went out there knowing we would take first or second, but we didn’t want to go out and kill ourselves, just wanted to qualify and run as a pack out there. It was kind of sad not winning regionals, but we qualified and that is all that matters in the end. Going into Nationals all we can do is just go out and compete and let the best team win.” On what another national championship would mean “I would be speechless. It would be great for OSU, for Dave Smith, for all the guys that have been working hard since this summer. It is going to be epic there.” On the race plan “We haven’t really talked about our plan yet. We still have a couple more days before the race. Dave will be thinking through it. Pretty much it will be me, Colby and Girma in the front, Tom in the middle, and a couple of guys in the back, doing what we do best. The last 2k it is all or nothing.” On the team this year “We are more confident, and we are more experienced. Colby and I have been in the national caliber for the past few years. We always have other guys that can back us up too. It just gives us a lot of confidence if you are having a bad day knowing there is someone there to back you up.” On going for individual honors “We will see. Maybe it isn’t my year, but I am not worried about that. I am just trying to win us a national championship that is what matters. We just want to be on the podium and be holding that trophy.”
On the possibility of bad weather “The worse the weather, the better it is. You never know what you are going to get on the day of the race. You just have to go out there and run, it is all about who is the strongest and who wants it more.” On what he likes about the team “The best thing about this team is the depth and how strong everybody is and how competitive everyone is. No one ever gives up. This group wants to do what the team before them did, the strength and mentality this team has is what makes them winners.” On replacing top talent from last year with comparable talent this year “It is a very confident feeling. You are going into the year where people were saying that we lost people and we shouldn’t be as good, but we never made that an excuse. The guys that we recruited here were recruited to fill that job, and they have done great at doing that. It is a good feeling to have people step up and run in that spot and do good.” On the other teams competing at nationals “In this race you are going to have multiple good teams. Some teams you aren’t sure if they will be a factor, but you have to go out there and run for the win. The only thing that we can control is ourselves and where we need to be. If we go out there and win, then we win, but if we lose we want to leave knowing we performed well and did everything we could.”
Women’s Athlete Mihaela Susa
On how the Cowboys rank heading into the meet “We are one of the top five teams. We just have to be mentally ready, physically we are there and we just have to be ready when it comes to race day.”
On the race “I am feeling very excited for Monday. It is an awesome feeling to have the whole team with me because last year I was by myself. It is a weird feeling to be around 260 girls by yourself. I am very proud of the girls for making it to nationals as a team for the first time in six years. It is my senior year so I told them at the beginning of the year I wanted to make it as a team. We qualified automatically.”
On Stanford “Stanford is a really good team, they have a one-two-three threat. We just have to be there to compete with them. The national championship is going to take the whole team to win, I think we have more depth than them, but you never know what is going to happen.”
On making the NCAA Championships as a team “Every single athlete has a dream to expect more and more. We weren’t sure if we would make it or not, but Dave believed in us. In the beginning of the season we weren’t sure how we would perform as a team because we are young. We surprised ourselves in a good way.”
On last year’s title motivating them this year “It is good to know we are defending our title, but no one knows what is going to happen. We will see what happens. We are just going to do what we do best. We can dream about it, but we aren’t there yet.”
On having her teammates with her at nationals “It is a big advantage to have the whole team there. Having my teammates there you have more control and have more fun. I get to look to my right and to my left and I see them and it gives me more determination to do better for them and for the team.”
Men’s Athlete Colby Lowe On the NCAA Championships “I mean I am excited. This is what we have been waiting for, it is something we have been working for and preparing for all year. We are going to go out there and perform hard. It will be a hard race. There will be a lot of good teams out there and we just need to go out there and end the year on a good note.”
On the possibility of bad weather “The weather does affect me, but I try not to let it. But you can prepare yourselves mentally and be ready for it. The strong people will run better than the ones that let it affect them. You just have to go to the race with a positive outlook.”
On what another NCAA Championship would mean “The feeling would just be unbelievable. There are not many teams that can repeat, and to win the first one is always the hardest and it gets even harder to win again. To win again would be another great thing for the program and for the guys. All the stuff that you have to overcome, and to rebuild again, it would just be amazing to win again.” On how OSU will approach the race “We are just going to run how we always do. At this point, we will go a little different to how the race will go. This is a different race that we will be running. That is our strength to do things right and precise just to go out there and get things done.” NCAA Championships | LaVern Gibson XC Course | Terre Haute, Ind. | Nov. 22, 2010
