OPPORTUNITY

BEYOND BORDERS YMCA World Service Campaign

Without opportunity, the greatness we are born with cannot be fully realized. At the Y, we believe that everyone has great potential and are committed to helping all people – regardless of who they are or where they come from – access the resources and support to thrive. In 119 countries, YMCAs help people overcome barriers such as poverty, illiteracy, or chronic disease, by providing them with access to the building blocks of self-determination: social inclusion, quality education and health services, safe spaces for personal growth and leadership development, and employment and livelihood support.

To help build a more inclusive, equitable world for all, YMCA World Service raises financial and technical resources to help Ys worldwide strengthen their capacity to reach and transform more lives. YMCA World Service grants are administered by YMCA of the USA and implemented locally by staff and volunteers who are trusted leaders with a deep understanding of community need and the relationships to produce effective, sustainable solutions. Your gift to YMCA World Service creates opportunities for more people to thrive, which leads to positive social change within communities, across countries and beyond borders.

CREATING A BETTER WORLD FOR ALL

YMCA MISSION: To put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all.

Every day in 119 countries, YMCAs empower vulnerable and underserved populations with resources and support to overcome barriers and reach their full potential. The YMCA World Service Campaign funds work in six key areas to help build the foundations of a more equitable and inclusive society:

ORGANIZATIONAL CAPACITY BUILDING

RECREATION, CAMPING AND THE ARTS

EMPLOYMENT AND VOCATIONAL TRAINING

YOUTH LEADERSHIP AND SERVICE LEARNING

HEALTH SERVICES

Ys worldwide collaborate to share technical expertise and resources that strengthen the Y Movement’s ability to respond to critical social issues. A coalition of U.S. Ys, for example, partners with the Haiti YMCA to build educational programs that serve more than 7,800 people.

The Y helps people learn job skills and find employment opportunities to sustain themselves and their families. The Nicaragua YMCA empowers rural farming families to work their way out of poverty through income generation initiatives that enable them to prosper.

The Y offers recreation, camping and arts programs to help youth from diverse backgrounds connect and build confidence. The Kosovo YMCA works with children and teens from opposing sides of conflict who have lost parents and family members to war.

The Y helps people overcome barriers to access health education and services so they can enjoy a healthy, productive life. The Lebanon YMCA gives Syrian refugees and Lebanese youth opportunities to improve their well-being in spirit, mind and body.

“World Service has helped us to offer exceptional programs and activities for youth and strengthen the structure of our organization.”

“We are no longer poor now. We have seven acres of land. We have sown our land and we sell the fruits we harvest. We are already making it.”

“We are creating a safe space for these children to look toward the future together. Camp is more than just a camp here – it’s a place to build peace.”

“We bring Lebanese and Syrian kids together and offer activities on life skills, hygiene, communication, and how to accept others. Now when they meet each other, they play together peacefully.”

EDUCATION

The Y develops the next generation of leaders with the values and commitment to create social change. The Africa Alliance of YMCAs empowers young people to lead change in their communities through civic action and advocacy, gender equality, youth justice and leadership development.

The Y provides educational opportunities to help people break out of the cycle of poverty. The India YMCA school for the hearing impaired helps young people who otherwise would not have access to school, develop confidence and the skills to live independently.

“They say it takes a village to raise a child and in many parts of the world that ‘village’ is the YMCA.”

“Our goal is to provide opportunities for children with hearing impairments to develop their daily living skills, receive a quality education, develop their capabilities and get integrated into society.”
