Optimized forestry using GIS Isabelle Bergkvist, Skogforsk Sweden
A quick view of Swedish forestry •
23 million ha forest, equals 50% of the land area
•
Yearly logging volume approximately 80 million m3
•
15% of the total value for Swedish export
•
Mechanized and, almost 100% CTL (cut to length systems )
•
High demands from society and the consumer of wood products - Sustainable and high valued logging with equal goals for production and biodiversity
An increased problem to solve -ground damages, soil compaction, hazardous to water and vegetation
•
Common policy in Swedish forestry
•
The key is good planning •
Concentrate the logging roads to areas with high carrying capasity
•
Focus on protection of soil and water
•
High cost if it is managed only in the field
•
That's were we use GIS as a decision support tool DTM Elevation Slope Aspect
•
Areas were not to drive
Cost index surface with optimized extraction roads

Low cost
Posibility to estimate the value of different alternatives

Common goal for everyone
•
High biodiversity and clean water
•
Increased productivity
•
Better knowledge and less mistakes
