Our Lady of the Assumption School 2141 Walnut Avenue, Carmichael, CA 95608 (916) 489-8958 January 14, 2014
With Hands to Serve and Hearts to Love This Wednesday Night is OLA Information Night, and it takes place at 7:00 p.m. in St. John’s Hall. If you know any prospective families interested in an OLA education for their children, please let them know about this event. Our faculty will be there to share with them an overview of our school program. This Friday, the Western Catholic Education Association (WCEA) and the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) will be sending its Visiting Committee to OLA to begin the first part of our accreditation process, the pre-visit. OLA goes through the WCEA/WASC accreditation process every six years. They will be here from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and their visit will include a tour of the school and a meeting with our faculty. They will be here again on March 4 through 6 for their visit. At that visit they will verify the findings that were written in our school’s Self Study document. They will be meeting with students, parents, faculty, and our parish staff. I would like to thank all of the people who have helped us to write our Self Study. We are looking forward to handing it off to the WCEA/WASC Visiting Team for their review. Flu season is here, and this is an especially bad year. The flu, including H1N1 strains, can be easily spread from person to person. Therefore, we are taking steps to reduce the spread of flu at Our Lady of the Assumption School. Please help support our plan for preventing the spread of the flu (any strain). Here are a few things you can do to help:
Teach your children to wash their hands often with soap and water or an alcohol-based hand rub. You can set a good example by doing this yourself. Teach your children not to share personal items like drinks, food or unwashed utensils, and to cover their coughs and sneezes with tissues. They should cover up their coughs or sneezes using the elbow, arm, or sleeve instead of the hand when a tissue is unavailable. Know the signs and symptoms of the flu. Symptoms of the flu include fever (100 degrees Fahrenheit, 37.8 degrees Celsius or greater), cough, sore throat, a runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, and feeling very tired. Some people may also vomit or have diarrhea. Keep sick children at home for at least 24 hours after they no longer have fever or do not have signs of fever, without using fever-reducing drugs. Keeping children with a fever at home will reduce the number of people who may get infected. Any children who are determined to be sick while at school will be sent home.
Please visit www.flu.gov for the most current information about the flu. Please remember to mark your calendars for Tuesday, January 28, 2014: A Special Event during Catholic Schools Week, an Evening of dialog to discuss and celebrate our community, our commitment, our covenant. As we Celebrate Catholic Education during Catholic Schools Week, we are asking parents to join us at this mandatory meeting. This will be a special opportunity to share our faith and discuss who we are as a Catholic school regarding faith. We will also explore how we as a church and school family practice our faith, especially by coming together as a community on Sundays. This meeting will not be a lecture and presentation, but a conversation that we all participate in, both in small groups and as a whole, with the purpose of renewing our faith and strengthening the Catholic identity of our school. Two (2) parish/service hours will be awarded for attendance, and babysitting will be provided in the Extension building. Fr. Kiernan and I look forward to seeing you on Tuesday, January 28th at 6:30 p.m., in our parish hall. Finally, we are asking parents to help us with uniforms. We are seeing a lot of violations, and we want to ensure that there is consistency. We will be warning students who are out of compliance with the uniform policy. Parents will be notified of the warning by e-mail. A second violation of uniform policy will result in a detention (grades 4-8) or a timeout at recess (grades 1-3). God bless,
Robert Love

Adult Faith Formation “Catholicism II-The New Evangelization” The Catholic Faith is not about myths, legends or symbols…it’s about an encounter so overwhelming that you want to tell the whole world. It is an encounter with Jesus Christ. Throughout history, the call of Christ has sent people to the corners of the earth with a message of great joy, a message that has built civilizations, inspired cultures, and even sent some to prisons and to their graves. We have the same call - - that’s the New Evangelization. This 6 session documentary series from Fr. Barron’s Word On Fire, continues the story of CATHOLICISM and explores the Church’s mission and the challenges of contemporary culture. Remaining class dates are as follows: ▪ Wednesday, Jan 15, at 7pm, in Seton Hall ▪ Thursday, Jan 16, at 8:45am, in Seton Hall Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament Adoration takes place on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:30am-7:00pm.
