Sports & Education GC Pioneers lose 4 to 3 in extra inning to Haywood

BY LORI CATHEY On Tuesday, Gibson County baseball team ended their season with a 4 to 3 loss in extra innings to Haywood. It was the play-in game for the District 13AA Tournament. The Pioneers had an overall record of 10 -16 for their 2013 baseball season. Gibson County starting senior pitcher A.J. Metzger had 4 of the 5 district wins for the season. For the past two seasons Metzger has led the Gibson County Pioneers with the most wins, the best earn runs average, most strikeouts and the most innings pitched. Junior Taylor McKinney lead the team with a .391 batting average, Carter McMackin had a .329 batting average and Josh Mathis with a .306 batting average for the season. Addison Davidson led the team with the most stolen bases and defensively he turned the most double plays for the season.

In the play-in game Haywood struck first in the first inning scoring a run off a single to take a 1-0 lead. In the bottom of the fourth the Tomcats added another run to give Haywood 2-0 lead. Through the first five innings Riley Sweatt and Grant Jones were the only two Gibson County players to have a hit. Gibson County turned a triple play in the bottom of the fifth inning. The play started with Haywood’s Blake Porch hitting a deep fly ball to center fielder Taylor McKinney, who caught the ball for the first out and threw to the cut off man shortstop Addison Davidson. Davidson then threw a laser to Grant Jones at second base for the second out. Jones rifled the ball home to GC catcher Carter McMackin, but the runner was safe. As the ball reached home plate, Blake Esquivias decided to try to go to second base but

McMackin was alert and threw him out at second to complete the rare triple play. Haywood took a 3 -0 lead over Gibson County. The Pioneers answered with one run in the top of the sixth inning. Taylor McKinney singled to center field, stole second, and scored on a single to right by senior Josh Mathis cutting the lead to 3-1. The Pioneers tied the game at 3-3 in the top of the seventh inning. Grant Jones singled to center field. He moved to second on a single from Jackson Cantrell. Jones and Cantrell scored on a single by Addison Davidson to tie the game 3 all. In the bottom of the seventh Metzger retired 3 of the 4 batters he faced to force extra innings. Haywood made a pitching change in the top of the eighth inning and he retired Gibson County in order. In the bottom half the Tomcats would score the winning run off a double and a single

to advance to the District 13AA Tournament. Leading Gibson County was Grant Jones. He went 2-3 and scored a run. Others hitting for the Pioneers were: Jackson Cantrell 1-2 with a run scored and a walk; Addison Davidson 1-4 with 2 RBIs; Taylor McKinney 1-4 with a run scored and a stolen base; Josh Mathis 1-4; Riley Sweatt 1-4 and Carter McMackin 1-4. A.J. Metzger pitched 7.2 innings giving up 4 runs. Only 2 of the 4 runs were earned runs. He gave up 6 hits and struck out 6 batters. A.J. Metzger was named Gibson County player of the week. A.J. threw 7.2 innings of the District PlayIn game allowing only 2 earned runs, 6 hits, and striking out 6 batters. A.J. recorded an ERA of 1.83 and also had an assist in the game. GC Lady Pioneers loss 10 - 7 to U.C. McKeand followed by a walk by Rebecca Lee. Hannah Hutchison ripped a double to the fence to score McKeand followed by a triple by Sydney Inman that scored 2 more runs. Inman scored on a wild pitch to even the score. In the top of the fifth, Union City answered right back with four straight singles. Through good hitting, they were able to score the four runs they had given up the inning before. In the bottom of the fifth, Claire Whitworth scored on a sacrifice fly by McKeand, cutting the lead to three. In the sixth inning, Union City scored two more run and Gibson County answered back by scoring two runs. However, neither team scored in the 7th and the final score was 10 to 7. Rebecca Lee was 2 for 3 with a walk. She pitched 7 innings and had 3 strikeouts and no walks. Hannah Hutchison was 2 for 4 with one run scored, one run batted in and one double. Lynsey Crews was 2 for 4 with one run batted in. Sydney Inman was 1 for 4 with 2 runs scored, 2 runs batted in, and one triple. Lady Pioneer Claire Whitworth was named player of the week. She was 2 for 4 with 3 walks and 2 runs. She had an on base percentage of .714. Defensively, she had 12 put outs and 2 assists. See GCHS Scoreboard below sponsored by WW’s Auto & Tractor Supply.

BY LORI CATHEY On Monday, the Lady Pioneers traveled to Ripley for a non-region contest. Gibson County jumped to an early three run lead in the second inning when Claire Whitworth and Katelyn Rickman got on base and were driven in by Grace Jewell and Sydney Inman respectively. Ripley scored one run in the third inning making the score 3 to 1. In the fourth inning, Gibson County’s defense committed several infield errors that allowed Ripley to score five runs and take the lead, 6 to 3. After a hot start, Gibson County’s bats went silent and they didn’t get a hit the rest of the game. Ripley added 3 more runs in the fifth inning and gave a final score of 9 to 3. Claire Whitworth was 2 for 3 with one run scored. She had 9 putouts and 1 assist defensively. Grace Jewell was 1 for 3 with one run scored, one run batted in and one double. Sydney Inman was 1 for 3 with one run batted in and one double. On Tuesday, the Lady Pioneers played Union City. The team’s batting started off quiet with only two hits in the first three innings. Union City scored one run in the first inning, two in the second and one more in the third to give them a four run lead.
