Dyer seeks alderperson nominations Two city board seats are now vacant and the Dyer City Board is now seeking nominations to fill those positions. The City of Dyer Board of Mayor and Alderpersons met in regular session, Monday, July 22, 2013 at 7 p.m. Those present were Mayor Chris Younger, Alderpersons Judy Baker, Robert Johnson, Bitsy Gilliland, and Marilyn Williamson; absent were Alderpersons Belinda Oliver and Michael Barron. City Attorney Jennifer DeenMcEwen was present. Baker made a motion to declare the seats held by Alderman Nathan Reed and Alderman Roger Gray vacant. The motion was approved. A motion was made by Baker to solicit nominations for the vacant seats on the Board of Aldermen through August 26. The motion was approved. In the visitors section of the meeitng Taneshia Albea at 221 Division St. asked the board to grant an adjustment for the bill issued June 30 and the bill to be issued on July 31. City Recorder Nathan Reed said that Albea’s bill was unusually high in June and that her usage for the first few weeks of the July billing period were high as well. Albea reported no high usage or leaks. Reed said that usage has returned to normal levels in the last week. Johnson made a motion to average the utility bills issued June 30 and July 31 for 221 Division St. to the previous three months. The motion was approved. see page 3
Rutherford hires new city recorder, police officers The main course of discussion at the Rutherford Board of Mayor and Alderpersons meeting on July 15th was hiring a new city recorder and new police officers. Those present at the meeting were Mayor Larry Davidson, and alderpersons Tony Weimer, Marlon Stephens, Larry Belew, James Roach and Sandy Comstock. The board discussed three applicants for the city recorder position. Davidson reminded the board to think about the job description of the city recorder before deciding on who would be the best applicant. Belew made a motion to hire Ann Caton. After some discussion the board voted in favor of hiring Caton. Belew, Comstock and Stephens voted yes. Weimer and Roach voted no. The motion was approved. Sales tax holiday is this weekend The State of Tennessee’s Annual Sales Tax Holiday is held every year on the first Friday in August and ends the following Sunday night. This year’s tax-free holiday weekend begins at 12:01 a.m on Friday, August 2 and ends Sunday, August 4 at 11:59 p.m. Following is a list of items qualifying for tax exemption and those that do not qualify. Clothing ($100 or less) tax-free items include: belts, caps, coats, dresses, gloves and hats Items subject to sales tax include clothing accessories: belt buckles (sold separately), briefcases, cosmetics, hair notions, handbags, jewelry, patches and emblems (sold separately), sewing equipment and supplies, sewing materials, sunglasses, umbrellas, wallets, and watches. protective equipment: breathing masks, face shields, hard hats, hearing see page 3

17th annual Good Luck rodeo dedicated to late Chief Greene BY LORI CATHEY The 17th Annual Good Luck Volunteer Fire Department Rodeo was held Saturday, July 27 at the Baier Roping Arena in Rutherford. David Brewer gave the invocation and also was the announcer for the rodeo events. Weakley County 4-H drill team helped get the rodeo started with the presentation of the American flag as Ashley Spear sang the Nation Anthem. The Good Luck Fire Department members dedicated the 2013 Rodeo to one of their own brother firefighters, Mike Green. “Mike was the Fire Chief of Station 5. He lived
and farmed in the Tyson Store community. He was a very giving person. His personality was infections. His outlook on life was bright, cheerful and giving. We lost Mike way too soon to a terrible disease. But his memory will live on in our hearts and minds forever,” said Travis Landrum Guy Cox with Rafter C Rodeo Company was the rodeo stock contractor. Jason Stroup and Tim Glassco provided the rest of the livestock. The first event was bull riding with 20 riders competing. Former GC students tour Europe Two former Gibson County High School students traveled to Europe this summer, taking advantage of an educational tour organized by Sally Baird, an algebra and geometry teacher at GCHS. Baird has offered students the opportunity to participate in the educational tours for several years. She helps arrange great group rates for students and parents who would like to participate. The students have the opportunity to visit places see page 2

The Gibson County Special School District begins the 2013-2014 school year on Wednesday, August 7th. Students will dismiss at 11:30 that day and no lunch will be served. The first full day of school is Thursday, August 8th. Report cards will be issued every six weeks for elementary school students and every 4 ½ and 9 weeks for high school students. The school year consists of 180 days.
