5.2.3 Principal’s Report to the BUSD School Board October 2017

Current Enrollments: PGHS: 33 students (79% male, 21% female) BIS: 25 students (82% “at risk”, 32% parenting, 44% 18 years or older, 56% working part-time) KBS: 4 students (1-2 more expected by the end of the month) *Please note the associated LCAP goals under each of the headings in this report.* Goal 1: Prepare students with the skills to excel in college and career. Goal 2: Increase the quality of instruction for all students by deepening implementation of the Common Core State Standards, and by implementing Explicit Direct Instruction district-wide. Goal 3: Ensure all student populations achieve annual measurable academic growth. Goal 4: Implement a plan to increase students’ sense of feeling safe and connected at school.

Pali’s Got Talent: 5th Annual Talent Show (with Amazing Vox!) Associated LCAP Goals: 2) Common Core, 3) Academic Growth, 4) School Connectedness This was our 5th year working with the Amazing Vox Duo, Roy & Annalisa. Students at PGHS met 1:1 with our performance/voice coaches over the course of 3 days, culminating in a public Talent Show on the Inyo Council for the Arts stage last Wednesday, September 27th. 15 out of our 32 Pali students signed up for at least one voice/performance workshop, and 11 performed on stage along with 3 PGHS staff members and 1 BIS student. Some focused on poetry or spoken word, one performed a dramatic reading of Shakespeare’s Macbeth, several took advantage of the professional voice coaching opportunity and sang, and two students brought their own original work to the stage to share for the audience. This year was unique in that we had

2 performances involving Native American culture, including family drums and story-telling or singing. It was a powerful event to witness! While we focus on the talent show being a fun and confidence-building opportunity for students, it also helps our small school reach common core standards in listening and speaking (LCAP goal 2), extends credit-earning opportunities in and outside of normal school hours (LCAP goal 3), and helps us form relationships with our students outside the typical academic/classroom setting (LCAP goal 4).

Out of the Box P.E. Associated LCAP Goals: 3) Academic Growth, 4) School Connectedness As a small school and staff, we are good at getting creative in terms of how we can provide students with a wide variety of experiences and course offerings. P.E. is one of those areas that has historically been a challenge for us. So far this year, we’ve connected with a variety of community members and along with the use of our Sunset/Slager grant, have offered a few exciting and active opportunities for our students. Mr. Woods and the YoBasecamp! organization took 8 PGHS students rock climbing in September and have another trip planned later on this month. Ms. Cooke is again bringing our P.E. class to the Big Pine Wellness center several times a week to use their gym facilities and is working with personal trainer Ashley

McLaughlin on circuit-training and gym routines with the group. Finally, I have connected with the owner of the Sierra Shanti yoga studio, Meredith Jabis, to provide a weekly yoga class before school each Tuesday morning for interested PGHS or BIS students and staff. At KBS, the probation department is regularly taking students out to the tennis courts for P.E. and providing tennis lessons. These unique credit-earning opportunities allow us to expose students to activities they may not otherwise try and get to know students outside of the classroom, fostering a climate of both academic growth (LCAP goal 3) and school connectedness (LCAP goal 4).

CA Court of Appeals & ASVAB Associated LCAP Goals: 1) College & Career, 2) Common Core Our PGHS seniors joined 12th graders from across the county on Sept. 21st to witness the CA Court of Appeals event at the Bishop High Auditorium. We always like to take advantage of “real world” activities that bring standards (in this case, American Government standards) to life (LCAP goal 2). 10 of our PGHS students took the opportunity to take the ASVAB at Bishop High on October 3rd, giving them a taste of how/where they might fit into the military after high school. Some students took the test because they’re serious about the possibility of enlisting in the military one day, while others were just curious about the test and what their results might be. Either way, the potential career pathways that correlate with their individual aptitudes will be outlined for them when the results come in (LCAP goal 1).

School Safety Associated LCAP Goal: 4) School Connectedness During the month of October we will be practicing our 3 main disaster drills: Fire, Earthquake, and Lockdown. We are pairing these emergency situation rehearsals with a survey for students about school connectedness. We want to know if students feel safe at school and that they belong, as well as get their input about what we can do better to ensure that we are meeting this goal with every student, every day. In light of recent attacks (i.e. Las Vegas), it continues to be critical to take proactive and preventative actions at our school sites, setting the tone of respect for both students and staff, and cultivating a climate where 4

fear and violence have no place, and respect, safety, and acceptance are the norm (LCAP goal 4). I will share the results of these surveys with you when they are in.
