The focus of this discussion will be on how to help individuals overcome the challenges of finding a job. Our discussion will include the full life-cycle of action to finding a job, including how to get a foot in the door for an initial interview, preparing with the “Adverbs of Interviewing” and other keys insights to making the meeting count. There will be a discussion on resumes including tips on how to make you appear more marketable on paper and NOT get lost in the crowd of resumes that HR and Hiring Managers are viewing. (Stay tuned to find out some “industry secrets” to get that job!)

Polymer compositions of any consequence are formulated with dissimilar materials to impart functional properties. The Interface is where these dissimilar materials meet. Various additives are used by formulators, compounders and processors to overcome the intrinsic interfacial dissimilarities. As the name implies, Coupling Agents are additives designed to couple atomically at the Interface of dissimilar materials. Coupling agents fall into

Editor’s Note
general classes dependent on their central atom(s); silanes are by far the current dominant commercial coupling agent used. The success of silanes and their limitations have created what the author describes as a “silane mindset”, which limits innovation with polymer compositions containing non-silane reactive carbonates and other materials. During the period of silane coupling agent market development, organometallics such as titanates, zirconates, metallocenes, etc. were considered generally to be polymerization catalysts or a source for metal oxides such as TiO2 via the TiCl4 process. The author was first to introduce heteroatom titanates and zirconates designed specifically to act as coupling agents that catalyze. The presentation will discuss some of the fundamental differences in the tetravalent chemistry of Si vs. Ti/Zr coupling – in practical commercial applications (reflected in over 7,000 Science IP Search generated ACS CAS abstracted works by the author and other investigators) – as to why titanates and zirconates as invented by the author may be better than silanes – and why that’s important to anyone in the polymer business.
Last month’s section meeting was held jointly with our student section at Rutgers (see pg 4), and it is exciting to see students getting involved and learning more about our industry. One of the presentations gave the students tips on their initial job search, and this month one of our speakers will give another perspective on the job search (see pg 1). you are part of an award-winning section (see pg 4), and thanks are due to all who volunteer their time, knowledge, and skills to keeping our section in top shape. If you are not already involved, what talents can you contribute? Contact information for the board of directors and committee leaders is found on the last page of every newsletter, and we would be happy to hear from you!

Section News Election Results
Student Article - Rutgers Chapter
Congratulations to the following officers elected for 2014-2015:
The Palisades-New Jersey Section held its March meeting at Rutgers university so that the school’s student chapter could easily attend. Eight members of the student chapter were present; three of these students, Meredith Taghon, chapter secretary Michelle Frondelli, and chapter president Arya Tewatia presented posters as well. These poster presentations were followed by talks from Arkema’s Dr. Steven Baxter and Zeena Cherian. Dr. Baxter’s talk, aimed at the students, was entitled “What Hiring Managers Look For,” and students gained some useful insight from this presentation.
President - S. T. Lee 1st VP -Mike Fisch 2nd VP -Giorgiana Giancola Treasurer - Francis McAndrew Secretary - Lenny Davis Councilor - Tom Martin Past President - Mark Lavach
Congratulations to the following directors elected for the 2017-2018 term (beginning July 1, 2014):
Ms. Cherian’s talk, titled “Principles of Polymer Rheology – Applications to Rigid PVC,” surveyed a complicated, fascinating, important topic. The Rutgers student chapter would like to thank the professional section for hosting a meeting at Rutgers. The effort and time needed to make this possible is much appreciated, and the chapter looks forward to a continued relationship with the professional section.

Summary of 2014 Minutes The Palisades-New Jersey Section of the Society of Plastics
February 20 Board of Directors Meeting
Councilor’s Report: Still pending is the status of SPE’s share of profits from TopCons. We received the Notable Award (2nd level of 3) for Communications this year. Standards have been set higher since last year. We were rated 16/20 with comments on Innovative communications, two way communications, best practices, and branding (which we need to improve). House Committee: The contract received from Somerset Hills did not reflect conversations with Pete. This hotel reportedly will work with us to get in $30 range for 3 meal choices, conference and meeting room). Somerset Hills also asked for a deposit. Rich gave Pines Manor 28 days to respond to a request for a quote for our monthly meetings but nobody did. Education Committee: A question was brought up about requirement for uS citizenship/permanent residence for individual scholarships. Mike Fisch will ask Brian to investigate requirements. Membership Report: SPE reported that our Section has 498 regular members (including Emeritus), 49 student, 4 young professionals (under 40), one of whom works for Princeton. There are more student members at RPI than at Rutgers. Thirteen in the Student Category have no affiliation with a university. One gave his address in India. There are no lapsed members reported. Board of Directors Nominations: Candidates are: Art Finkle, Stu Kapp, Arya Tewatia, Mike Carnese for Directors terms 20162018; Joe Duska moved to approve this slate, Pete Hayles seconded, approved by voice vote, no dissentions or abstentions. Lenny Davis will forward nominations to SPE by March 31.
January 16 Board of Directors Meeting
Councilor’s Report: Tom Martin reported that Council is waiting for a response from Executive Committee for several pending questions regarding split proceeds from TopCons. Status of the SPE website is questionable. There did not appear to be any changes in the website, promised February 2014. Francis had question about dues rebate, to be reduced 25% from last year based, assuming that membership has not been reduced again. Finance Committee Highlights: Francis McAndrew gave report. The Section’s share of profits from Vinyltec were received and moved to Ziegler for inclusion in our Education Endowment Fund account. 15% in cash on hand is to be invested fully by June by Steve Duerr. Scholarship update: . Len K. asked about recognition for Leonard Nass. We could name high school scholarships after five founding fathers of the Palisades and Newark (New Jersey) sections. Len K. to provide a list. $18,500 budgeted for scholarships + $2,500 Board Discretionary. Plastivan: Plastivan on January 15-16 is funded through money allocated to the Weinberg Scholarship. $1500 was budgeted. We are cosponsors with Plastics Pioneers Association. Officer Elections: The board voted by paper ballot for officers and councilor. No write-in candidates or floor nominations were seen. (See Results pg 5)
