PARTICLE SIZE DISTRIBUTION - PSD By Laser Diffraction Industries Served Application
Maxxam is always looking for ways to improve our quality and service offerings for our customers. As part of this commitment, we ensure that the instrumentation and methodologies we use are current and effective in providing the proper analytical data and results for each application.
Industries Served
Our Particle Size Distribution Analyzer (PSD) is a very effective instrument for determining the grain or particle size of a sample. Some general specifications of the Malvern Mastersizer 2000 are: •
Principle: particles, in an aqueos suspension, diffracting a laser beam
•
Range: particulate sizes 0.02um - 2000um
•
Report: sizing presented in graphical and tabular format in units of ASTM E11 Mesh and micrometer or client defined graphings
•
Matrix: non-water soluble solids, colloids, semi solids (ie. fat globules), stabilized emulsions
•
Results: provides a relative distribution of particle sizes but does not quantify as in a TSS
•
Oil Sands Processing
•
Sand Industries (Foundries)
•
Cement Plants
•
Oil & Gas Production
•
Environmental & Engineering Consulting Firms
Application This instrument is designed for bulk solids analysis on things such as: • • • • • •
Sand Pellets Powders Dust Scale Filter Deposits
However, there are ways to utilize it for solids suspended in waters if present in sufficient quantities. A water sample that is murky or cloudy due to solids is ideal for this process. Post filtration waters, potable waters or clear ground waters are generally too clean.
PARTICLE SIZE DISTRIBUTION - PSD
Emulsion Droplet Size: Emulsions are often an important part of a process or a substantial problem. If a stabilized emulsion is present the droplet size of that emulsion may be determined in a similar fashion to the Particle Size Distribution. If the two phases of the emulsion have substantially different Refractive Indices (e.g. oil and water) a distribution of the size of the droplets can be determined to assist in characterizing the fluid. The sample can be analyzed “as is” if it’s “hydrocarbon dry” (oil free). A water-wet sample (mud, sand or soil) can be analyzed directly after proper homogenization and screening out particles larger than 2mm. Dry samples are homogenized through riffle sampling and wet samples are homogenized by mechanical agitation or mixing. If oil/bitumen is present, clean up is required. Typically this is done by Dean-Stark. If the amount of solids is low (
