Paulo’s Excercises - #3 Passing, Crossing and Finishing Emphasis is on making accurate passes, crossing and finishing.
Skills used in the drill: Passing, receiving, finishing. Exercise Progressions 1. Limit the number of touches. 2. Have players switch sides of the pitch so they can use both the left and right feet. 3. Add Passive and/or Aggressive Defenders. Coaching Points:
Use the inside of the foot square to the ball for passing. Trap and Receive with the instep of the shoe with the foot bent upward at a 45 degree angle. Head up to see who and where you are passing. Take shots to the far post/upper corner of the goal. Use feints and speed to beat the defender. Turn body toward the goal when completing a cross.
Training Session Tips 1. Pick 1 topic or theme for each 90 minute session. Change themes every 1 to 2 sessions. 2. Always start with 5 to 10 minutes of warm-up (with or without a ball) and stretching (dynamic stretching is recommended). 3. 25 to 30 Minutes of technical (skills) training 4. 25 to 30 minutes of small sided games 1 v 1, 2 v2, 3 v 2, 2 v1 etc. 5. 20 Minutes of scrimmage with the numbers you have i.e. 4 v 4, 5 v 5, etc. 6. Always complete post-session cool downs and stretching.

Dash line = Make a Run or dribble Line with 1 arrow = Pass.
Exercise 1 - Setup: 1. Set up a grid like shown above (use ½ to full pitch with a goal and goalie on each end). Instructions: Divide the team into 4 equal groups placed on each of the goals. Player 1 makes a long pass to player in Line 2 at the same time player 3 makes long pass to 4. Player 2 and 4 run onto the ball on their respective side, they receive and fake inside and take ball outside. Player 1 and 3 apply passive defensive pressure. Player 2 and 4 dribble ball up and complete a cross to the player on opposite side (1 and 3) to run onto, receive and finish. Exercise 2- Setup: 1. Use same setup as exercise 1, but add cones in the middle that the players use as target in placing a short pass. Instructions: Player 1 dribbles up and makes a short pass past the target cone for the player in Line 2 to run onto, handle, dribble up and shoot. At same time Player 3 performs the same exercise but to player in line 4. Players rotate lines on their side of the pitch.

Exercise 3-Setup: Setup: 1. Use same setup as exercise 2. But now they will be using a long pass. Instructions: Player 2 makes a long pass at the target cone for the player in Line 3 to run onto, handle, dribble and finish. At same time Player 4 performs the same exercise but to player in line 1. After passing, player 2 and 4 become passive defenders then return to the line across from them. Player 2 goes to line 1and player 3 goes to line 4. After finishing, player 1 goes to line 3 and player 3 goes to line 1. Exercise 4 (2 v 2) - Setup: 1. Use same setup as exercise 3, but now divide teams into 2 teams (blue and yellow) working 2 v 2. Instructions: Player from Yellow team in line lays out a pass for the other yellow team to run onto, handle and then the two players take on the 2 Blue players. Play ends for Yellow when they finish in or out of the goal. Blue then becomes the attacking team and takes on the next 2 Blue players.
