Paulo's Excercises #4: Finishing Exercise #1

Paulo’s Excercises #4: Finishing Exercise #1 Emphasis is on making a run and finishing in a game like situation.

Setup: 

Set up a grid like shown above (use ½ of the pitch with a goal and goalie on one end).

Instructions: Divide the team into equal groups. Have each team keep score to promote competition. Players line up behind cones.    

Players take turns dribbling through cone using right foot with inside and outside the foot touches. Player passes to the coach and makes a run behind the coach Coach lays out a pass and player runs on and takes a shot. Players return to start.

Progressions 

Switch start to the opposite side and use left foot.

Skills used in the drill: 

Dribbling, Passing, receiving, finishing.

Coaching Points: 1. Use the inside of the foot square to the ball for passing and trapping. 2. Head up to see who and where you are passing. 3. Take shots to the far post and upper corners of the goal.

Players for each team take turns in the exercise. Player passes with right foot to the coach and then sprints down to last cone. Player backpedals around cone and back to start. Coach lays out a pass and player runs on and takes a shot. Players return to start.

Instructions: Divide the team into equal groups. Have each team keep score to promote competition.

Players line up behind 1st cone.    

Players for each team take turns in the exercise. Player makes long pass past last cone then makes a run through cones. Player runs onto the ball and takes a shot. Players return to start.

Progression 1 (See diagram 2)  

Player passes to Coach and makes a run through cones. Coach lays out a pass to the corner and player runs onto it and takes a shot.

Progression 2 

Switch both exercises to other side of field and use left foot.

Training Session Tips 1. Stick to one topic or theme for each 90 minute session. Change themes every 1 to 2 sessions. 2. Always start with 5 to 10 minutes of warm-up (with or without a ball) and stretching (dynamic stretching is recommended). 3. 25 to 30 Minutes of technical (skills) training 4. 25 to 30 minutes of small sided games 1 v 1, 2 v2, 3 v 2, 2 v1 etc. 5. 20 Minutes of scrimmage with the numbers you have i.e. 4 v 4, 5 v 5, etc. 6. Always complete post-session cool downs and stretching.
