Immediately after this, Jesus insisted that his disciples get back into the boat and cross to the other side of the lake, while he sent the people home. 23 After sending them home, he went up into the hills by himself to pray. Night fell while he was there alone. 24 Meanwhile, the disciples were in trouble far away from land, for a strong wind had risen, and they were fighting heavy waves. 25 About three o’clock in the morning[b] Jesus came toward them, walking on the water. 26 When the disciples saw him walking on the water, they were terrified. In their fear, they cried out, “It’s a ghost!” 27 But Jesus spoke to them at once. “Don’t be afraid,” he said. “Take courage. I am here![c]” 28 Then Peter called to him, “Lord, if it’s really you, tell me to come to you, walking on the water.” 29 “Yes, come,” Jesus said. So Peter went over the side of the boat and walked on the water toward Jesus. 30 But when he saw the strong[d] wind and the waves, he was terrified and began to sink. “Save me, Lord!” he shouted. 31 Jesus immediately reached out and grabbed him. “You have so little faith,” Jesus said. “Why did you doubt me?” 32 When they climbed back into the boat, the wind stopped. 33 Then the disciples worshiped him. “You really are the Son of God!” they exclaimed.

Psalm 107:23-32 23

Some went off to sea in ships, plying the trade routes of the world. 24 They, too, observed the LORD’s power in action, his impressive works on the deepest seas. 25 He spoke, and the winds rose, stirring up the waves. 26 Their ships were tossed to the heavens and plunged again to the depths; the sailors cringed in terror. 27 They reeled and staggered like drunkards and were at their wits’ end. 28 “LORD, help!” they cried in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress. 29 He calmed the storm to a whisper and stilled the waves. 30 What a blessing was that stillness as he brought them safely into harbor! 31 Let them praise the LORD for his great love and for the wonderful things he has done for them. 32 Let them exalt him publicly before the congregation and before the leaders of the nation.

Introduction: The phrase walking on the water has become symbolic of doing those things in life that take Faith in God to accomplish!

7. Jesus walks Peter back to the boat and when they get in the boat everything is calm concerning the storm but the gospel of Mark tells us the disciples hearts were hard because they didn’t understand about the bread. 8. The story ends with the disciples worshiping Jesus and declaring truly you are the son of God!

The big idea: Water walking requires a pliable heart that is willing to get out of the boat based on your belief in Jesus and your willingness to be obedient to the One who has called you! ***Here are the principles of water walking 101:

First: to walk on water one must first get out of the boat!

Second: to walk on water one must believe that God is mightier than the water!

Prepare our minds for action: ***The gospel of Matthew, Mark, and John help to clarify what we know about the miraculous walking on the water by Jesus. 1. Jesus sent the disciples back across the lake and dismissed the crowd after the feeding of the 5000. 2. We learned from the gospel of John that the crowd of people wanting to take Jesus and make him their King. 3. Jesus dismissed the crowd and then slipped away into the hillside by himself to pray. 4. Jesus saw them from the hillside in serious trouble out on the water and so then he came to them walking on the water. 5. The disciples were terrified when they saw him and thought he was a ghost, but the gospel of Matthew records that Peter asked Jesus if it is you Lord then command me to come out on the water to you! 6. Peter gets out of the boat and walks on the water a short distance with Jesus but begins to look at the wind and the waves and starts to sink, and sinking he cries out to the Lord for help.

Third: to walk on water one must not only believe God but also be obedient to him as well!

Fourth: to walk on water one must have a soft and pliable heart!

Closing remarks: After reading and studying our story today did Peter fail?
