Accept and understand the seriousness of their responsibility, and the privilege of representing their school and community. 2. Learn the rules of the game thoroughly and discuss them with parents, fans, and fellow students. 3. Treat opponents the way they would like to be treated, as a guest or friend. 4. Never direct remarks at opponents in a taunting manner. 5. Wish opponents good luck before the game and congratulate them in a sincere manner following either a victory or defeat. 6. Respect the integrity and judgment of the game officials. 7. Display great effort and hustle on the field or floor. 8. Play unselfishly in such a way as to build up their team, without drawing unnecessary attention to themselves. 9. Yield to the authority and direction of all officials, bench officials, school personnel and coaches.

IHSA SPORTSMANSHIP MISSION STATEMENT Good sportsmanship is the attitude and behavior that exemplifies positive support for the interscholastic programs of IHSA member schools, as well as for the individuals who participate in demonstrate respect for others and display good sportsmanship. One of the goals of interscholastic competition is to teach important values while enriching the educational experience of the young men and women who participate. Good sportsmanship is clearly one of our programs highest priorities.

8

Sport Specialization The quest to become better at a given task is a goal of every athletic program. The opportunity to attain the highest level of physical skills and the resultant team performance has led to more emphasis in sport specialization. Year-round participation in other sports as well as some of the individual sports in not uncommon. In addition, most coaches encourage their athletes to continue to work on their game during the off-season. Participation in athletics is just one program among others which lead to personal growth for students. Sports specialization diminishes the opportunity for young people to become involved in a variety of school programs. Being involved in a variety of sports has been shown to improve the athleticism of student athletes. Proponents of specialization suggest that it is essential in order to be able to play collegiate athletics. However, the percentage of high school athletes who have the physical capability and interest to participate in college athletics is relatively small. Many outstanding athletes in college and the professional ranks have multiple sport backgrounds. There are many high school athletes who have specialized in one sport, hoping for a college scholarship, and found out that their level of competence was insufficient for college competition. Someone with a keen interest and potential may choose to specialize. However, the NCAA Athletic Department would encourage young people to pursue a wide scope of activities to experience a broad range of programs for the greatest possible growth.

Volunteer Work by Players and Parents: Our girls basketball staff, the entire athletic staff at BHS, and the Batavia Sports Boosters does everything in our/their power to provide the absolute best for your daughters. For example, the Sports Boosters provide new uniforms for all of our sports teams. They also provide funds for other needed items in our program. The boosters and the girls basketball program will be asking players and parents to volunteer their time during the season and offseason. I encourage all of you to participate as much as possible. The more who volunteer, the less time is required of each person. The boosters will be asking parents to volunteer time to work concessions throughout the season. I will be asking for parents to volunteer time to work at the tournaments we host here at BHS. Please consider that donating an hour of your time is like you donating $50 to our program. In some cases, even more than $50.

For questions about volunteering at BHS tournaments please contact Coach Jensen: [email protected]

For questions about volunteering with concessions during home games please contact Liz or Jeff Orman: [email protected]

Thank you in advance for all of your time and support!
