PIECES OF THE SOLUTION

TO FRACKING & CLIMATE CHANGE AN ARTS EDUCATION PROJECT TO BUILD FOR THE MARCH FOR CLIMATE LEADERSHIP

"Any human power can be resisted and changed by human beings. Resistance and change often begin in art." --Ursula K Le Guin, 2014 National Book Awards WHAT: A participatory art project for students, youth and adults. Art and handwritten letters in the shape of puzzle "Piecesof the Solution" will be carried on the March for Real Climate Leadership on Feb 3rd, 2015 in Oakland, displayed at therally, and ultimately delivered to Governor Brown. The messages will be urging the governor to be a real, positive "Pieceof the Solution" to the problems of fracking, climate change, and the California water crisis. WHY: to visually show and tell Governor Brown the solutions and alternatives to fracking, and the climate change, water waste, and pollution it causes. To engage, educate and raise the attention of our communities and the public. WHO: Youth, student, or community groups of people with concerns about fracking, climate, and water are invited to participate. Are you up for doing an art and/or writing project to show and tell Governor Brown how to be "a piece of thesolution"? HOW: Rrespond to the question, "What are the solutions for, or alternatives to, fracking for oil and gas -- and to theclimate change that fracking contributes to?" Then draw, paint, color, collage your answers to Governor Brown in a picture OR in a letter or poem--or a combination. Detailed instructions are on the back. INSTRUCTIONS

We are hoping you and your group can bring your puzzle piece to the march and carry it for the world to see. We will display and photograph all the "Pieces of the Solution" together, and we will also take them at the end of the march if you'd like us to deliver yours to Governor Brown. Imagine dozens or hundreds of giant puzzle-shaped solutions amidst a sea of people marching through the streets of Oakland and on the shores of Lake Merrit. Making a piece is easy -- write or draw your message on a small puzzle piece cut from an 8.5 x 11 piece of paper -- the heavier the paper, the better. Then, glue the paper pieces to a larger, blue carboard puzzle piece. Feel free to paint larger images or messages on the giant puzzle piece, such as a message at the top like, “Gov. Brown: Be a PIECE OF THE SOLUTION!."If possible, please use the march color of blue--for clean water and sky and with yellow for sun and solar. Be sure you sign it with your name, your city (and if you are youth or student, your age)! We have some "kits" of puzzle-piece-shaped paper available to be picked up or sent by mail.Contact Vanessa
