The Pittsburg State University men’s basketball team will return to the friendly confines of John Lance Arena for a pair of Thanksgiving week games. The Gorillas will play host to Newman University Tuesday (Nov. 20) at 7 p.m. (CST) and then entertain Southwestern College Saturday (Nov. 24) at 3 p.m.

THE RECORDS Pitt State is off to a 3-0 start to the season. The Gorillas scored 85 or more points in wins over Baker (88-67), Lincoln (86-78) and Avila (85-75) last week. Pitt State downed Baker at home Tuesday (Nov. 20), before sweeping a pair of games played in the Chris Tucker Memorial Classic Friday and Saturday (Nov. 16-17). Newman will bring a 2-0 record into Tuesday’s action. The Jets defeated Manhattan Christian, 99-39, in their most recent action on Nov. 14. Newman opened the season with a 97-60 win over Tabor on Nov. 12. The Jets posted an 18-9 record last year. Southwestern is 7-2 on the season heading into a Tuesday (Nov. 20) match-up against Grace University. The Moundbuilders opened the season with five straight wins. Southwestern was 19-11 in 2011-12.

Pittsburg State’s Kevin Muff is in his third season leading the Gorillas. Muff (Kansas State, ’86) became the Gorillas’ 14th all-time head coach on Apr. 5, 2010, after spending 12 seasons at Cloud County Community College, where he helped the Thunderbirds to an average of 21 wins in each of the last five seasons. He has a 33-27 (.550) record in his short tenure with the Gorillas. Muff has a 1-0 record against both Newman and Southwestern College. Mark Potter (Newman, ‘86) is in his 15th season coaching his alma mater. Potter has guided the Jets to a 264-154 (.632) record. He is 1-2 vs. Pitt State. Matt O’Brien (Missouri State, ‘92) is in his fourth year leading the Moundbuilders. O’Brien has compiled a 55-42 (.567) record heading into Tuesday’s match-up against Grace University. He is 0-1 vs. Pitt State.

GORILLAS AT HOME

Pitt State has posted a 363-175 (.674) all-time record at John Lance Arena since the facility opened in 1972. The Gorillas have compiled a 176-58 (.752) record at home during the last 18 seasons. Pitt State’s all-time home record stands at 807-336 (.706).

SERIES HISTORY Tuesday’s action will mark the 23rd all-time meeting between the Gorillas and Jets in a series that dates back to the 1974 season. Pitt State holds a 13-9 advantage in the series, including a 10-2 margin in games played at John Lance Arena. The Gorillas rolled to a 95-68 victory over Newman the last time the two teams met on Nov. 16, 2010. Saturday’s contest will mark the 85th all-time meeting between the Gorillas and the Moundbuilders in a series that dates all the way back to 1910. Pitt State holds a 54-30 advantage in the series. The Gorillas downed Southwestern, 104-71, in the last meeting on Nov. 26, 2011.

SCOUTING THE GORILLAS Early in the season, Pitt State has three players scoring in double figures and five players contributing nine or more points: freshman guard Kaleb Porter, senior center Rico Pierrevilus, junior forward A.J. Adams, senior guard Mark Nolen and senior forward JaVon McGee. Porter is averaging a team-leading 21.3 points per game, while Pierrevilus (12.7 ppg) and Adams (11.0 ppg) also are scoring in double figures. Nolen is scoring 9.7 points per game, while McGee is contributing 9.3 points per game to date. Porter, a true freshman, is off to a fast start to his collegiate career after being named the MIAA Player of the Week Monday (Nov. 19). The Tulsa, Okla., native set a new PSU freshman scoring record with 34 points in Pitt State’s win over MIAA rival Lincoln at the Chris Tucker Memorial Classic. He had 16 points in the season opener vs. Baker on Nov. 13 and he finished the week with a 14-point effort in a win over Avila on Nov. 17. Through three games, Porter is shooting .474 (18 of 38) from the field, .500 (7-14) from 3-point range and .808 (21-26) from the foul line as well as averaging 3.0 assists per game.

Pierrevilus, who is averaging 12.7 points and 3.7 rebounds per game on the young season, had an impressive season debut against Baker on Nov. 13. The West Palm Beach, Fla., native scored a game-high 20 points against the Wildcats. He made his first seven shots from the field, including a pair of 3-pointers. For the season, Pierrevilus is shooting .632 (12-19) from the field and .846 (11-13) from the free throw line. Adams, who came to Pitt State from Eastern Arizona College, has made an immediate impact for the gorillas, averaging 11.0 points and 6.7 rebounds per game. The Jeffersonville, Ind., native also has recorded three blocked shots. Nolen, a Wichita native, is averaging 9.7 points and 4.7 rebounds per game. He also leads the team in steals (3.3 spg) and shares the team lead in assists (3.0 apg) thus far. McGee has contributed 9.3 points and a team-leading 7.0 rebounds per game in a reserve role for the Gorillas. The Grandview, Mo., native was slowed in the preseason by an off-season injury, but he has seen 20.0 minutes of court action in Pitt State’s first three games. Senior guard Courtney Ingram also has chipped in with 7.3 points and 5.3 rebounds per game, while freshman guard Jake Bullard also has averaged 7.3 points and 3.0 rebounds per game. As a team, Pitt State is averaging 86.3 points per game, while limiting its opponents to 73.3 points. The Gorillas are shooting .438 from the field (78-178), but they are limiting their opposition to .412 shooting (75-182). Pitt State has generated 34 percent of its offense from the free throw line thus far. The Gorillas have converted 88 of 121 free throws (.727), averaging 29.3 points per game from the charity stripe. Pitt State has outscored its opponents by an average of 12.3 points from the foul line thus far. Pitt State has committed 48 turnovers thus far (16.0 pg), but the Gorillas also have forced their opponents into 47 turnovers (15.7 pg).

SCOUTING THE JETS

Newman enters Tuesday’s contest with a 2-0 record to start the 2013 season with wins over Missouri S&T (83-61) and Northeastern State (47-46). The Jets finished last season with an 18-9 overall record. The Jets return two starters and their leading scorer from last year’s squad. Senior guard Shamar Acuay averaged 13.8 ppg during his junior campaign. So far this season he is averaging 16.6 points per game while shooting .813 (13 of 16) from the field. Senior guard Bobby Wesley is averaging 5.0 points and a team-high 5.5 assists per game through the first two contests. Last season, Wesley contributed 8.9 points and 2.8 assists per game. Sophomore guard Ryan McCarthy and junior forward Marquis Cuyler are each averaging 11.0 points per game. Trae Beck is just behind them, contributing 10.5 points per contest. Beck has connected on six of 14 (.429) shots from beyond the arc this season.

SCOUTING THE MOUNDBUILDERS

Southwestern College finished last season with an 19-12 record. Entering a Tuesday night matchup with Grace University the Moundbuilders are 7-2 on the season. The team does not return a starter from last season’s squad. However, they have received a balanced scoring attack with five playersscoring averaging in double digits. Senior Forward Michael Morales leads the team in scoring. Morales is averaging 15.0 points per game and is second on the team pulling down 7.0 rebounds per game. Freshman forward Cameron Clark is the team’s leading rebounder, averaging 8.4 per game. Clark also contributes 11.5 points per game. Freshman guard Taylor Johnson, sophomore guard William Tisdale and junior guard Cayd Bloomquist round out the Moundbuilders cast averaging in double figures. Johnson is second on the team in scoring averaging 13.3 points per game, while shooting .431 (28 of 65) from 3-point territory. Tisdale and Bloomquist are averaging 13.0 and 12.0 points per game, respectively.

Kevin Muff, Head Coach Kevin Muff is in his third year as head basketball coach at Pittsburg State University after being hired to the position on April 5, 2010. Muff has compiled a 33-27 (.550) record in his short tenure at Pitt State. He led the Gorillas to a 17-14 record and a berth in the finals of the MIAA Postseason Tournament in 2012. Muff, 48, a former assistant coach at Pitt State from 1990-93, returned to campus after serving the past 12 seasons as head coach at Cloud County Community College in Concordia, Kan., where he averaged 21 wins per season over his last five years at the school. Prior to his assignment at Cloud County, Muff coached five seasons at Wamego High School, leading the school to a Kansas Class 4A state runner-up finish in 1998. He was named the Flint Hills Area Coach of the Year during the 1997-98 season. He served as the top assistant at Pittsburg State from 1991 to 1993 under former head coach Dennis Hill, after serving as a graduate assistant for the Gorillas in 1990. Muff helped the Gorillas post a 21-8 record during the 1991-92 campaign – the school’s first 20-win season in two decades. That Pitt State squad rose to a top 10 national ranking and the Gorillas upset No. 1 ranked Washburn, 72-71, before a school record crowd of 5,000 fans at John Lance Arena on Jan. 18, 1992. Pitt State narrowly missed the NCAA Division II National Tournament that year – at the time only four teams in each region qualified for the postseason and the Gorillas finished the season ranked fifth in the South Central Region. Prior to joining the Pitt State staff, Muff served as an assistant basketball coach at Atwood High School from 1987-90. He served as a student assistant coach at Kansas State University under former Wildcats head coach Lon Kruger during the 1986-87 season. Muff, a member of the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association, served as the president of the Kansas Jayhawk Conference Basketball Coaches Association from 2004-2009. He was extremely active in the community of Concordia, Kan., serving as a volunteer coach for Concordia Youth Basketball and a volunteer for “Big Brothers/ Big Sisters” of Cloud County. Muff also served as a lector at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church. Muff, a Salina, Kan., native, was a two-year basketball letterman at Kansas State during the 1984-85 and 1985-86 seasons. He transferred to K-State after playing two seasons at Cloud County Community College, where he was a first-team NJCAA All-Region VI selection as a sophomore in 1983-84. Muff was both a McDonalds and Converse High School All-America selection as a senior during the 1981-82 season at Salina Central High School. Muff earned a bachelor’s of science degree in education (BSed) in social science from Kansas State University in 1986 and a master’s of science degree (MS) in physical education from Pittsburg State University in 1991. He is married to the former Kim Kidd. The couple have three daughters: Alex (20), Skyler (18) and Taylor (12).

Pitt State Pulls Away Down Stretch for 88-67 Season Opening Win PITTSBURG -- Rico Pierrevilus scored 18 of his game-high 20 points in the first half while A.J. Adams and Kaleb Porter combined for 25 second-half points to lead Pitt State to an 88-67 season-opening victory over Baker Tuesday (Nov. 13) at John Lance Arena. The Gorillas (1-0) led by as many as 19 points at 56-37 with 11:59 to play in the game but the Wildcats (3-2) used a 17-5 run over the next 4:36 to trim the margin to seven at 61-54 on Corey Anderson’s three-point play. Adams and Porter combined to score the game’s next seven ponts and Marky Nolen completed a 9-0 Pitt State run to push the Gorillas back in front 70-54 with 5:24 remaining in the contest. The Wildcats never got any closer than 11 points of the Gorillas down the stretch. Pierrevilus made his first seven shots from the field while scoring 18 first-half points as Pitt State built a 40-26 halftime advantage. He added nine rebounds to narrowly miss posting a double-double for the Gorillas. Adams did log a doubledouble with 16 points and a game-high 10 boards as Pitt State owned a 48-32 rebounding edge against Baker. Porter also finished the game with 16 points on the strength of nine for 11 shooting from the free throw line. Pitt State made 25 of 36 charity shots in the contest as the Wildcats were whistled for 23 personal fouls. JaVon McGee added nine points while Jake Bullard contributed eight points and six rebounds. Baker got 12 points apiece from Anderson and E.J. Carter, while Brandon Moore chipped in with 10 points. The Gorillas limited the Wildcats to 36.7 percent shooting (22 of 60) in the game. Pitt State will return to action Friday (Nov. 16) when the Gorillas take part in the Chris Tucker Memorial Classic. The Gorillas will face MIAA rival Lincoln at 12 Noon and then round out the classic format tournament with a game against Avila (Mo.) at 5 p.m. Saturday (Nov. 17).
