Dropout Rates Compound the Issue Fail to graduate on time: • African American: 11-15% • Asian/Pacific Islander: 8-16% • Caucasian: 18-25% • Hispanic: 23-42% • Native American: 48-61% Variation due to different schools

Growing Diversity An increasing proportion of students in the early grades have been typically under-represented (or at risk) in higher education. We need them to stay in school, prepare, and go to college. WA State

Our Conclusion • Recruiting only Juniors and Seniors misses a large number of students. • Not only have some students dropped out, but many have tuned out, and many are not taking the right courses. • We decided to plant the seeds - early!

Several Programs “I Am Going to College” “Summer Science Camp” Elementary and Middle School visits The Middle School “Menu” Students of Color Career Conference

“I Am Going to College” Co-sponsored with NELA, Northwest Education Loan Association: – They provide a curriculum to the schools. – They provide funds for backpacks, T-Shirts, gifts, pizza. – They assist with preliminary organization.

The College: •Creates the agenda •Hosts the event •Makes the presentations •Handles publicity •Does follow-up

“I Am Going to College” • Hosted twice a year • About 80-150 kids each time • Usually two schools at each event • Teachers and parent aides accompany them; kids are brought by bus

“I Am Going to College” Sample activities: • • • • • • •

2Yr. Coll Grad $15/hr $2,500

4 Yr. Coll Grad $21/hr $3,500

Results? • Too early to tell. • We know it is now an expected event. • Kids tell their brothers and sisters and parents. • Good relations with schools. • We do not collect their names, so not sure we will ever know! • May be able to see an upward trend in our yield from local schools, but mobility is such we may not see a clear trend. • Then intangible result is “undoing institutional racism”.

“Summer Science Camp” • Two camps, one week each, in August • Collaboration between community college and YMCA Minority Achievers program. • Funded by Boeing, Verizon. ($1012,000 per week) • In-kind by colleges and YMCA. • Not for the faint of heart!

“Summer Science Camp” • Aimed at 7th, 8th, 9th graders • Goal is to include more females and students of color • However, it is open to all • One week session, 25 kids each • 9-4, Monday through Friday • Free, with snacks and lunch

“Summer Science Camp” Curriculum includes • • • • •

Science lab experiences Field trips Teams Competitions Emphasis on college prep and science careers • Learning about gender and ethnic diversity in science • Seeing successful role models as team leaders and as instructors • Graduation

“Summer Science Camp” • Orientation for Parents is the kickoff each summer; parents invited to graduation. • Just finished our fifth summer. • Some kids are “repeaters”. • Follow-up during the year with letters, invitations to events, a winter “reunion”.

Results • Positive relationships with kids, many of whom we see in other venues. • Several have enrolled. • Siblings want to attend. • Focused some diverse resources on a single project. • Some kids are smart from the outset; others simply enjoy the attention they are getting. • We have their names and we can track their enrollment.

School Visits • Some of these are visits to our “I Am Going to College” partners; others are the result of other relationships. • Select schools with high ethnic populations, with limited English students. • Presentations vary: fairs, classroom presentations, Money Game. See our Menu. • They are just as important to us as the high school visits.

Students of Color Career Conference • Middle and high schools send students of colors – and others – to a 6-hour event on the college campus on a Friday. • Speakers, sessions, booths, prizes • Co-sponsored by the city of Everett, Everett Public Schools and Snohomish County.

Resources - Partners • YMCA, youth program, or similar program – helps to identify populations and specific students. • K-12 counselors and/or principals. • Other colleges and organizations – helps to diversify programming options, and helps share the resources needed. • Business and industry – helps with funding as well as program. • Your own faculty.

Resources - Staff • A designated champion. • Staff time for planning, the scope of which depends on the scope of your program(s). • Staff on the day of the event(s) – intense. Need several staff and volunteers for setup, signs, greeting, herding, programming, tear-down. Sometimes use staff for transportation. • College students – as volunteers, as team leaders. • Faculty and staff – leading sessions. • Public Information Office – you want news coverage! • Your president, for the graduation. • More staff time.

Resources - Supplies • Pizza, snacks. • Souvenirs, gifts, prizes. – Favorites are backpacks, dictionaries, books, highlighters, notepads (note that these are fairly low-cost).

• Signs, handouts.
