• Head coach Matt Langel had this to say about the upcoming season: “Coaches are always eager to start the season and I am no different. This year’s schedule will be another great challenge for our group, but I know the guys are excited for it. The Patriot League has proven to be an extremely competitive conference, and we expect this year will be no different. I like that our nonleague schedule provides a good mix of games against familiar New York schools as well as games against out-of-the-area opponents, closer to the homes of some of our older players.Undoubtedly, these games will not only serve as opportunities for great experiences but also as great preparation for our ultimate goal of competing for the Patriot League Championship.”

Matt Langel was named the 20th head coach in the 114-year history of Colgate basketball on April 25, 2011. Langel came to Colgate after spending five seasons as an assistant coach at Temple University (2006-11). Langel worked under the tutelage of Fran Dunphy, who is one of the all-time winningest coaches in Philadelphia Big 5 history and has twice been named Eastern College Coach of the Year after guiding the Owls to their fourth-straight NCAA Tournament appearance. Dunphy had this to say about Langel: “I’m thrilled for Matt. Colgate gets a person with great character who is very wise and can be a mentor to all of his student athletes.” Langel was also a two-year member of Dunphy’s Penn staff where he helped guide his alma mater to two consecutive Ivy League Championships. Langel, a 2000 graduate of Penn’s Wharton School of Business, helped lead the Quakers to two Ivy League titles and NCAA Tournament appearances during his four-year career (1996-2000). The Quakers went 27-1 in Ivy League action in his junior and senior campaigns and sported a 42-14 overall record. Langel was named Ivy League and Big Five Player of the Week numerous times and received the Big Five’s Most Improved Player Award. He was also named to the Holiday Festival All-Tournament team (1998) and the University of California Golden Bear Holiday Classic All-Tournament Team (1999). Langel etched his name in the Penn record books in several different categories. He is a member of the 1,000-point club with 1,191 points in a Red and Blue uniform. He stands second all-time in Penn basketball history in three-pointers made in a game with eight, is eighth in three-pointers made in a season with 70, and fourth in career three-pointers made with 201. Upon graduation, Langel was drafted by Atlantic City of the USBL in 2000 and worked out in the Seattle SuperSonics camp. He then went overseas to play professionally in Europe, for Chene BC in Switzerland and ALM Evreux Basket in France Pro A. The Moorestown, N.J. native participated in the Philadelphia 76ers summer camp in 2001, but returned to Europe to play for the MBC and Hagan in German Bundesliga I. His last professional stop before returning to Penn as an assistant coach was with the Eiffel Towers in Holland. The Wesley M. Cotterell Court is located in the Wendt Wing of the Reid Athletic Center and is home to the Raider men’s basketball team. It accommodates 1,760 with chair back seating on the east side and general admission bleachers on the west side. Cotterell Court was dedicated on December 3, 1966 to Wesley M. 13 THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT COLGATE AND RAIDERS MEN’S BASKETBALL This is Colgate’s 115th season of men’s basketball. The first year of the program was 1900-01 when the Raiders went 5-8 during their 13-game schedule.
2
The student-athletes at Colgate do more than just play sports; they devote time to reach out to the Hamilton community with events such as Adopt-a-Classroom, Read with the Raiders and awareness games.
3 4
The Raiders return four starters and 14 letterwinners from last year’s squad, that went 13-18 overall and 6-12 in conference play. Colgate adds two transfers and two rookies to its lineup for the upcoming 2014-15 season as well.
Colgate finished last season 13th nationally 3-point field goal percentage compiling a mark of 39.6. They were also 21st in 3-point field goals per game with 8.4. The Raiders also set a new program record for 3-point field goals made in a single game with 17 and in a season 260; while seeing Austin Tillotson finish third all-time in season assists with 133.
5 6 7
Colgate has a number of out-of-conference big games this season with contests against Arizona State, Ohio State and nearby rival Syracuse slated. The Raiders will also compete in the Buckeye Classic, which features a game against the Buckeyes, James Madison, Campbell and Sacred Heart. Colgate held steady at a 98 percent graduation rate for the second consecutive year, tying Raider student-athletes for best in the Patriot League and fourth nationally.
Head coach Matt Langel returns 73 percentage of his scoring from last season, 75 percentage of his rebounding and 72 percent of his 3-point shooting.

9 10 11 12 13
As of last year the Raider staff was one of the highest-scoring coaching staffs in the entire country, coming in at the 10th spot. Between head coach Matt Langel and assistant coaches Mike Jordan and Dave Klatsky, the three of them notched 3,397 points for the University of Pennsylvania and are now all working under the same roof once again at Colgate. This ranking was only measured by former Divison I student-athletes.
The Raiders have won 43 team Patriot League and ECAC Hockey titles, while reaching the NCAA tournament 37 times.
The Raiders home court record stands at 306-255 in their 48 years of playing there. Colgate has seen 10 different coaches pass through the doors of Cotterell Court, including two Hall of Honor receipients in Bob Duffy and Jack Bruen. The Raiders make national television numerous times throughout the year with games set to be broadcast on CBS Sports, ESPNU, Comcast SportsNet, the American Sports Network and Time Warner Cable Sports.
Senior guard Pat Moore is 165 points shy of reaching the 1,000-point plateau in his career. He is also currently sitting ninth all-time in Colgate’s records books with 162 made 3-pointers and second in 3-point field goal percentage with a mark of .410. Colgate was originally founded as The Baptist Education Society of the State of New York by 13 men who each offered $13 and 13 prayers. Our address is 13 Oak Drive, and we are located in the zip code 13346 (the first two digits are 13, and the last three digits add up to 13). There is certainly no triskaidekaphobia (fear of the number 13) here -- in fact we’ve embraced it as Colgate’s lucky number!
